hi im one member of one of the teams that have been chosen to appear on this program
idears only and advise
i have to build a water powered car
min 3 wheeles
your allowed engine pumps etc but the final drive must be powered by water
like turbine water wheel etc

It sounds as though you will need a (literal) hydraulic transmission. Wiki has an entry for them:

The alternative would be to have one pump driven by the engine, the water moved by this turning a second pump which turns the wheels. I'm not sure if it could be made to work though!

i was thinking of making a trike it has to carry 1- 3 team members at any one time
and i think weight will be a issue as we have to carry the water on bord

I'm not sure how scripted it is (I've noticed they always seem to have relevant scrap in the yard), but it'd probably be best to have a number of ideas that you can pick and choose from. Otherwise you might get there and find that a vital piece of your idea isn't available and couldn't be fabricated in time!

This is a turbine from the local power station in llanberis my mate works there and says that a thin powerful jet of water hitting the ridge in the centre of the two cups is somthing like 30 times more powerful that a flat blade , If you can imagine a scaled down version with a wheel on each end then thats your rear axle :D
Combine that with a motor to a hydrolic pump and a big tank of water and bingo...

that was roughly what i was thinking
big engine big pump runnina a turbine the only thing is
i want to use the least amount of water as weight i think will becom an issue
and they only give us 150 pound to play with any thing else it comes out of my pocket

my mate was on there he built the wheelie-ing reliant rialtos and also built his on moster truck based 'loosely' and i mean that! on a 110 pick up

thats the beauty of this twin cup thingy you only need a jet of water about 5mm round to hit the ridge .
the water wheel in the vid was replaced by a cupped wheel 4 feet in diameter :shock: and the cupped one pumps out more power...

well the 4 foot on in the slate museum powers all the workshop machines that used to run off the big wheel ,
You could mabe make a big cupped wheel and gear it down to the axle to give more torque .
now I've had a look around and it's called a pelton wheel (http://www.doradovista.com/images/CRW_7749corrsharp333x500.jpg)
A 2mtr one of these with 2200 feet of head ie.water traveling down a pipe from 2200 feet above the wheel (hill side) through a 1/8 inch nozle produces 60,000hp :shock: so scale it down and have fun :twisted:

so a 1000 cc moter bike engine running a pump pushing out a jet of water on to a wheel like that

lets hope we aint got to reverse lol

I'd say a v8 running two pumps and two wheels would be more fun :twisted:

Have you thought about recycling the water back into the pump so that you can minimise tha amount of water carried as ballast?
Not sure how you could do it and it would depend on the flow rate of the pump, but encasing the wheel would keep the crew dry and collect the run off. Only issue then is feeding it back into the "fuel" tank. Course... if the "fuel" tank was below the wheel then it would naturally flow back in... but getting the power to the axle might mean some fancy propshaft work!

If you can cellect as much of the water fired at the turbine as poss, then reuse it, that'll reduce the amount you need to carry.

you could put a sump under the water wheel and use the cooling pump on the engine to cool the engine and pump the water back to the tank at the same time...

for gods sake make it stable, dont want it toppling over with all that water sloshing about in tanks.

How about something on a no-loss system like a fridge/freezer. Pump the fluid round in a constant pipe.
also, remember that a steam engine is technically water driven, (if thats not bending the rules?)

have not tried to bodge a steam engine together and if i did i would not like to be near it lol
and in a race i dont think they are that fast

just a thought but boats some have an engine driving a hydrolic pump then to the hydrolic motor , i wonder how long it would work iff you could substitute the hydrolic oil for water, iff at all. or how long will it have to last :huh:

also think some of the key issues are:
power to weight
reuse water
stability
i like the idea of using the water to cool the engine, also gives you a lift pump..
i also think steam would be a wise option - look at historical uses of water power... water wheels on mills, then steam engines....
when will it be aired? dont forget to keep us updated!
