I went to the Indoor 4x4 show today and picked up some leaflets about 4x4 adventure holidays.
I have Atlas Overland, Trail Masters and Croatia Overland.
The Croatia one looks very interesting as a place to go, but I'm not sure about the amount of 4x4 driving (I'll check!). Not really interested in Morocco/desert so Trail Masters are out.
Atlas Overland looks really good (Alps) but we're not sure about the number of times you have to de-camp... as it may not suit our young children.
What would be really nice is an arranged tour that has a more permanent base. Does anyone have any more suggestions of companies that do this type of thing?
-
This months Land Rover World has a got a write up on various trips/companies - can probably scan and mail a copy of the article if you want?
-
That would be great - I've PM'd my email address :)
-
Well we are going to the alps this year with Atlas overland with our 4 kids and its the fact that you are travelling through several countries and on remote trails that apeals to us. will post later on in the year when we have been

Gords, did you have a mud-club leafet stuck on you motor when you came out,
-
the Alps is on our agenda for 2006 as most of the companies dont do much in the summer hols.
This year its scotland
-
Gords, did you have a mud-club leafet stuck on you motor when you came out,
No... but I've got a mud club sticker in the rear window and a Bramcote one on the side. So maybe they assumed I was already a member
Were you there Colin? I heard that there was a plan to meet at 1pm, but I couldn't stay that long
-
i was there too
spoke to the atlas company about the morocco trip and basically said the cost includes evertying EXCEPT you have to get yourself to the south of spain yourself.. which knocks up the complete cost considerably.
to be honest a trip to anywhere could be organised by simply sitting down and doing loads of research.

Quite possibly, but you have to sit down and do loads of research! Plus, you don't get other people to go along with - which I hope will add to the fun :)
-
Yep I was there and I spent too many beer tokens as well.
-
i disagree,
if you advertise for a group well in advance and make the proposition good enough then im sure others will tag along.
make it more exciting by planning the routes together etc (involvement = interest)

I understand your point of view and very often we plan every aspect of our holidays ourselves. On this occasion though, we can appreciate the "package" option
But, if someone/some people hereabouts fancy arranging an Alps trip in August.... :)

If you want to go abroad do it. I have travelled just with my family (wife two children),to poland, slovakia , czech, spain, switzerland, france, germany ,belgium, holland. Never booking anything but the ferry, mainly campinig in France, Holland,Germany, Spain, but in eastern europe staying in hotels.poland costs about £25 a night for adouble room ensuite, Slovakia, from £10. a night in the Czech republic about £35. camping costs in germany france about £15 a night. and with friends austria Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia. This year i was thinking of poland again because it is very cheap, meal for 4 with beer £10-£15.also i want to visit greece or morrocco. Travelling with others is agood idea if you break down as i did right in the middle of brussels in my old 110 Luckily my mate vic towed me to Waterloo LAND ROVER garage. I think 3 or 4 vehicals is best. alanweston

Me and simdeb are taking our kids to the Alps  and unless McDonald’s have pulled a fast one and bunged a restaurant on top of the Alps it shouldn’t cost that much plus hopefully we can make our own entertainment  plus you can't use the kids as a excuse have a go you know you want to

have you not been to the Swiss Alps before then ...
We went to Switzerland last year and did it/found it all ourselves - ferry ticket, overnight stop, chalet in Grindelwald, etc. That was in the VW Sharan and we mainly used the trains & cable cars and walked.
What we would like to do this year is a 4x4 tour and I think going with someone (company) that has local knowledge is the best way. Certainly easier than planning it all yourself!
In many ways, it would be nice to plan it all ourselves but I can't see us having the time to do it.

Gordon

Now then you two - you're gonna have to spell it out for me ... I have no idea what's going on :?
We're thinking of doing the Alps trip, but are still unsure. Our worry is that our kids are young (6, 4, 2 ish) and won't appreciate being moved every few days! I have emailed Atlas and asked for more a more detailed Itinerary.
I was going to say we might join the 6th August trip with you ... but I'm a bit worried now
-
Hello gords :D
I am sorry to worry you but we are only partly mentally and criminally insane the rest we just practise  at and I must say Simon is getting better at it  . I have recently asked atlas for a full Itinerary but as yet I have not received it I have also asked what temperatures we are likely to experience because my wife thinks we will be bumping into penguins that have had the same problem as the brass monkeys  she thinks its going to as cold as the north pole  . We will be dragging a trailer full of hot water bottle if she has her way  . Your nippers are a bit young what are they like at travelling because according to the web site the first few days have got us travelling up to 6 hours at a time to reach the camp sites

We drove to Switzerland last September, with an overnight stop and plenty of stops during the day(s).
They were quite alright, although that was in our VW Sharan which, I must say, is a bit more comfortable  I think as long as we're not moving camp sites every day, they'll be OK!
-
i think once we are down in the right area we only every few days we use the camp sites as a base camp.
dont worry about simon he can't bite hes lost all his teeth distemper or some such disease
-
Yippee!! The application form is filled in, deposit cheque written .. in the post tomorrow :D
We're off to the Alps with Atlas Overland in August \:D/

Hello Gords :D
I will try and house train Simon before the Alps  and use plenty of flea powder and any other medication the vet gives him :-k . The only problem with him just lately and I am trying to stop him doing it is his tendency to cock his leg up car tyres and lamp posts ](*,) aaaahhh he is cute (what an I saying he is butt ugly) I look forward to seeing the you all on the 6th  I will have to learn that song how does it go (the hills are alive with the sound of music) or any other bodily sounds if Simon is around see you soon

-
well don't you think you should stop wearing blue eye shadow blue is your colour but !!!!!! :D :D
-
Might try pink when we go to the Alps because blue is so old fashioned and pink will contrast with the snow better don’t you think
-

yes i have done it before and no you two are not big enough to stop us!!
