Title: radio/cd/mp3/bluetooth head units
Post by: wingnut1 on May 28, 2008, 23:12:37
I have a 300 disco , i want to swap my old cassette/radio for a new unit which has radio/cd/mp3/bluetooth etc.
Can anyone out there tell me a unit that will plug and play and still keep the controls working on the clock binicle(around the speedo) as i find them handy.
Also can anyone help with the wiring for the subwoofer as i have heared its a problem.

The dashboard controls are difficult - you can do it but you have to pick the right radio and get an adaptor cable.

I do have a fix for the subwoofer but it's somewhat Flintstones. I just connected it across the two rear speaker outputs which has now been working for about three or four years with no problems. I did hear a suggestion that it would cause the head unit to overheat (like trying to use giant floorstander speakers with a small amp) but it seems fine. I know the subwoofer on mine has a factory fitted amp, so I suspect that avoids any problems as the head unit is only providing a signal to the external amp rather than trying to drive the subwoofer. You do have to play with the levels to avoid getting thumping bass with little or no definition. Do this at your own risk!

In the event of my finding a radio/CD/MP3 unit that could work with the dash controls and had a simple line in on the back (for my car PC's MP3 collection) I'd be sorely tempted. After the towbar anyway...

i have a Wharfdale (off ebay - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260227150713&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=016 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260227150713&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=016) works a treat and has a USB port on the front and Sub/Amp ports on the back)

there is an adapter that will allow the surrounds to work but it is radiculas price, we looked in  to it for my mums but ended up just fitting a head unit an not bothering with the,

best is to get your a Sub and Amp comby and wire tem in the back as there are lots of problems with the original ones not being able to cope with the wattage put through them from aftermarket head units
