Hello one and all.
Just a quick question, I'm interested in replacing the rings on my 200tdi bottom end and generally giving the engine a spruce up.
I have a NEW injection pump and PAS pump already fitted.
I'm interested in anyone lese experinces of doing similar.
Regards

A set of rings is only £20 or so, and a set of big end shells is less than £20. You won't be able to do all the main shells with the gearbox and timing cover still on the engine. Head will have to come off as well, so about £20 (again) for a head, rocker, inlet/exhaust gaskets.

*tdi90 comes out of his shell*
:)
doing just that at the moment for a defender 200tdi.... and er... its not cheap.
so, i stripped the engine down with the help of a friend and that took a day.
had a general look over before taking the whole thing to the machinists. they tested and measured and did all the bits and bobs.
for my partcular engine it needed re seating of the valves, new big end bearings, shells all round, rings all round, Re grinding of the crank, but DID NOT NEED REBORING - however it was not very worn
i am about to pick up my engine from the machinists this week, and have a bill of £420 to pay for all the work.
that is without the re bore... and me taking it apart and putting it back together again.
however if they were to to ALL the work (inc rebore if needed) , take apart , machine, put together again it would have cost me close to £1500.
but at least this way i have effectively a 0 milage engine.
i hope this helps, any questions, pm me if you want...

thats not even including gaskets  ;)

I can beat that ! :P
300TDi engine for £50 (so I reckoned it might need a couple of pounds spent on it) :)
Rebore, cam bearings fitted and line bored, genuine pistons, genuine seals and gaskets, brand new Turner head - complete with valves, new rockers, valve caps, pushrods, turbo, gen starter and alternator, lift pump, water pump, oil pump and timing belt kit. Injectors and lift pump tested, new injector pipes and glow plugs. I haven't totalled it up, but I reckon around the £2000 mark. At least I have what is essentially a new engine.

Well my plan is to remove the head (it's already been rebuilt) and then remove the pistons and replace the shells and other bearings, clean and check everything then reassemble with new gaskets and rings.
I want to keep the costs to the minimum and then if it doesn't work as desired I'll spend the big money.
I also have a new turbo in a box that came with the car and a brand new inlet manifold from land rover aswel.
I think the previous owner was told it was a head problem so he had that done and found it was a bottom end problem.
Hopefully i can do this cheaply!
