anyone know if rot on the baulkhead is a MOT faliure?
i would imagie most of it is but what about the top of the bulkhead, by the vents inside, it is rotted through inside though cheers.

As I understand it, it works on the principle of whether or not there are any critical components nearby. For example, if there's a gaping hole near the steering column then it's not going to pass. But if the hole is somewhere like in the middle of the bulkhead, below the dash, then it should be okay.
I would say that rot around the middle of the vent area could be classed as structural, since it has to support the entire length of the windscreen although the windscreen's greatest loadings are taken by the mounts at the ends of the bulkhead. Hopefully an MOT expert will be along soon to answer the question! :)

Just depends how bad it is and where :lol:
I would not fail it if its where i'm thinking of :D only if it had sharp edges to the side's.

Its something like 9cm from a mounting/fixing point (not sure if its 9)
Basically if its x away from where the bh is fixed e.g to the outrigers than it will fail, also like edy says if its X away from steering mount or often the brake cylinder then its a fail. I think the usual top bit by the vents is ok to a point, hence so many landys wiht "extra" ventilation.
Iterestingly I was told if you carpet it then the tester can not remove the carpet so cant fail it (unless they have reasonable suspicion, e.g. soo the engine bay), but whod want to drive a rusty death trap.

The rule is 30cm from a structure point, such as chassis, suspension, mounting, or other critical point. Bulkheads usually rust first close to the windscreen mount/hinge or door hinge, and it's a bit of a lottery if the garage is going to fail it. If it's slight, then you might get an advisory, but a big hole is likely to fail.

hi, cheers everyone. bassically there is a a bit by where the bulkhead connects to the outrigger but i have brought all the a posts and new parts for that and the footwells. the problem with the top is there is a few metal fabricators around but you have to take the motor to them. so i was thinking get it through its MOT so then i can legally drive it to the bloke and he will fabricate somthing for me to weld in place, you fell a bit of an idiot trying to describe it to people :) it is bassically where the windscreen connects to the balkhead though, but is it possible to justtake the windscreen off, i have a full canvas so it is no trouble to do it? might have to get the angle grinder out to take the sharp edges off though.

You can get bulkhead repair panels for the area you describe. If you are worried about the MOT, then use filler for now and then sort it out properly afterwards.

ye i could do that, good idea. no ive got the repair panels and they dont cover the inside, out side is fine but the inside has no sort of panel for it, its bassically the part that the window attacs to. ive got a pic of it, make explaining it easier

You can replace that corner piece with a panel as a temporary repair, but it does look quite bad. Then again, a mate of mine just used a repair panel and cut out all the rot there so had a bit of a gap and used his 2A like that for a few years!

a repair panel for the inside? really, i have never seen one. im not overly bothered about the look that much

Sorry, I mean there's a corner panel you can use. Chop out that rot that's visible there and a corner repair panel can then be fitted, it's the piece that the hinge bolts onto that wraps around to the front of the bulkhead.

i have the repair panel for the out side and that is now in place but i didnt know there is one for inside. cheers, im sure i will find a way.

There's no repair panel for the inside that I know of - I made my own out of 1.2mm steel.
