If the disco is mainly going to be a towing/road vehicle then I wouldn't bother with a lift. It doesn't improve your ground clearance and 1" of lift really isn't going to make very much difference to the tyres you can fit to it. So apart from looks and increased body roll it won't make any difference to the disco at all.
-
I'd just go with Heavy Duty springs with gas shocks for towing.
-
I've been thinking about the set at the bottom of this page, http://www.llama4x4.com/page5.htm My gas tanks have taken some of the ground clearance along the sills so it's a cheap fix for me.

hi guys thanx for the replys yes its for towin but also some green lanes so some small lift wud be benifical for slighty bigger boots
has anyone else used llamas kit skip linked too?

1" lift will give you 1/2" extra ground clearance. HD springs and shocks will let you fit bigger tyres than a 1" will.

really wouldnt bother with a 1 inch, at leaste 2" without making mods for under 200 quid nowdays.

how does a 1" lift give you 1/2" extra ground clearance?
and HD springs don't give you any lift! unleast they are +1" /+2" or +3"

Ground clearance is measureed from the lowest point on the car to the ground. In this case usually the diffs. If you fit a 1" lift your lifting the chassis and the body. The diffs been below the chassis doesn't move at all. So the extra 1" hasn't given you any extra ground clearance. But because you have can get a 1" larger tyre on the axle. It will lift the diffs 1/2". Giving an extra 1/2" ground clearance.
If you fit HD springs or even new standard springs it will remove all the sagging that inevitably happens in all springs and lift the disco.I had a 110 and fitted HD springs front and back and it lifted it by 35mm. A 1" lift is a complete waste of money. Just replacing worn road tyres for a set of the same size MT's will give you nearly 1/2" lift.
-
thank you!
So the extra 1" hasn't given you any extra ground clearance.
so it doesn't give you any ground clearance

key word "inevitably" so you fit nice new springs and then they start sagging!!!.

NO but the 1" larger tyres he'll be able to fit will give him 1/2" of extra ground clearance.

right guys so ur sayin lifting it by 1" aint worth the trouble?
heres another ? for you disco guru's mine is still fitted with the landy tape player so the dash controls still work do landy do an upgrade to cd player?
also do the 200tdi's have any oil pump issues? as my oil light flickers on tick over?
thanx guys

Hi Generation,
The norm for most discos I see out is to fit a 2" lift whether it be blocks or springs and shocks is up to you.
With the 2" lift you will get away with fitting 235 85 x 16 tyres which in turn will give adequate lift for some gentle laning.
If you decide to go with blocks then wizard is the guy to speak to or any engineering firm could knock some up for you.
If you decide on shocks & springs then try e-bay as they crop up now and again or if you want new I would reccomend Foundry 4x4 as they seem to be the cheapest.
With regards to the stereo the plugs on the back should be the same as the later 300 series and I know they did cd units so shouldnt be a problem.
With regards to the oil light situation it could be several things:-
i) in need of an oil change.
ii) low on oil
iii) dodgy oil pressure switch
Anybody feel free to correct me if need be.

hi colin
thanx for your reply was begining to think i was a leper 8-[
will check all the above
now were wud i find a 300 cd player can anyone confirm that one wud work with the dash controls?
simon

my light used to flicker and as time wentt by it stayed on longer and longer .
I had the oil presure checked and it was ok turned out the presure switch was all gunked up so I stuck in a new one and the light went away
as for the lift go for 2" it looks better  and gives you twice the lift with the same amount of work :D
then you can go 235/85 :afro:
I haven't used llama lift stuff but their brake lines are spot on as is their service

I did try once for a cd player for my 300 but wasnt sure of model numbers as head units seem to sell seperately to the cd units and there are several different models so I opted to ditch the dash controls and fitted a CD unit from halfords for around £50

There are a few of the DOC that run 235 85s with no lift, just new springs and a "camel" cut. I was following one on monday in ruts, I had to reverse back out but Az kept going! I run 235 70s. Both Discoveries sit at the same height, but he has that extra bit of clearance under the diffs!
Regarding a CD player, I had mine from http://www.equicar.co.uk/ worth a look.

In all honesty you don't need to lift it. I've done a fair bit of laning now with no mods beyond a set of BFG 235/70 R16 A/Ts and have only found one bit of terrain it wouldn't have handled.
