Hi, long time - no posts !

I know that the subject of tyres/wheels/sizes etc, has been done to death on various forums, but I have a couple of questions that I cant find the answers to.....

My Disco currently wears 18" wheels, fitted with 255/55/18 rubber, and I now need to get it some new boots. Ideally, I'd like an AT tyre (had BFG AT's on my last Disco), but they dont make them in 18" size, so I've acquired a set of five D2 16" wheels, fitted with part-worn 235/70/16's.

1. When the time comes (when SWMBO is not looking !), can I fit 245/75/16 tyres to these wheels, with no adverse affect to the truck ?

2. Will I have to change the steering lock stops (longer ones fitted at the moment)

3. I have SLS, will 245/75's cause any problems ?

TIA, and sorry for asking what are probably really dumb questions !

I saw this tyre on a refurbed 90 in LRE - spoke to the garage and they said that the tyre is not suitable for the Disco, it would 'upset' the gearing apparently !

255/55/18's give a 10.5" width and 29" diameter approx
235/70/16's give a 9.5" width and 29" diameter approx
245/75/16's give a 9.6" width and 30.6" diameter approx

So in relation to your original tyres, the 245's will be narrower but taller without any obvious problems. You'll find your speedo reads approx 5% less than you're actually doing. You should be able to wind your bump stops in a few turns also. Shouldn't need to change them. You'll gain approx 3/4" under each axle in the process which is always worth while when venturing off the tarmac.

I'd say No Probs at all.

OK, it's all getting a bit clearer now. My speedo is not accurate (according to the GPS), so that's no problem.

Just need to find a good deal on the BFG's and convince SWMBO that I NEED to spend some more beer tokens !

I found Paddocks quite cheap for BFG, not bought them yet though.  They will send you to a local tyre place that fits them for less than a tenner a corner too :)

I believe that the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R is available in a lowish profile 18" size too, although personally I would want to go back to a 16" if I was going to do any off road work.

I thought that they used the MTR on the G4 in 18", but I've not seen any adverts, and the tyre places I've spoken to, claim that it doesn't exist !

I'm going to go with the 16"ers - it's just whether to go for the 235 or 245 ?

I have a pair of BFG ATs in 235 70 R16 size.  They have only done 3000 miles and have even got the bobbles between the tread blocks they are so fresh. Took them off my Disco series 1 recently as I didn't like them.  They are yours for £125 + about £11 delivery if you want.

Plenty cheap because they are cluttering up my shed!

Brought 5 BFG's  235/70/16 AT fitted and balaneced for  Ã‚£497 From  Micheldever Tyres on the A303 near Basingstoke if that any help.

Thanks for all the great replies, I'm still undecided on size at the moment - stick with the original 235, or go for the 245's..........does anyone have good and/or bad experiences running 245 BFG AT's ?

One nagging thought that has crept into my mind is would the 245's invalidate the LR warranty - as they could be classed as non-standard parts ???

Hi,

I'm friends with the farm in my village and both brothers have a disco. One with 225 and the other 245. Both use them around the farm simular miles but the wider tyre wears quicker.
