Title: Request for All the Scouters Out There
Post by: Skibum346 on June 24, 2008, 15:13:22
Guys,

I'm now involved in the ACF but as an ex scout I'm finding them sadly lacking in ideas for activities outside the expected military curriculum.

I seem to remember that in scouting there was a resource (probably online now?!) that gave leaders ideas for command task type challenges. You know the kind of thing, "you have a 2000 foot deep chasm to cross, it's 30 feet wide and all yuou have is a 2p, a 5p a clean hankie and some string".

In preparation for some training I'll be doing with them I'd like to get hold of this kind of resource. So, if you know of a resource like I've just described, or you have some good ideas for a physical command task challenge I'd appreciate you getting in touch.

Dib dib dib and all that!

First things first, it's DYB DYB DYB and it's the abbreviation of Do Your Best. Now you're prepared for that pub quiz.

Secondly take a look around http://www.scoutbase.org.uk/ there's plenty of resource on there and may well be a few ideas like the ones you're after.

All the best

Thank Mike... I stand corrected on my spelling of DYB!   8-[

Had a look at Scoutbase and found a couple of things... but not really what I'm looking for. I've been hoping to find descriptions of a "Situation" with a list of equipment and a solution.

I'll keep looking for now.

Have you tried the dump???

http://www.thedump.scoutscan.com/scouts.html (http://www.thedump.scoutscan.com/scouts.html)

They have scaned all the scout books through history and put them in pdf formats you can download .

We used it a bit but theres tons of stuff on there you just have to read through it ...

But remember most of it is from the before the pc/health and safety of today so you may have to rewrite some with safety in mind ;)

The other resource is Programmes Online ( http://pol.scouts.org.uk/pol/home.do ), but you need to be a member of the Scout Association to be able to access this resource.  Everything stored on Programmes Online is submitted by Scout Leaders, and has to adhere to POR (Policy, Organisation, and Rules, of the Scout Association), so will likely have been subject to a Risk Assessment.

...stuff H&S

There is an argument that the less kids are exposed to challenging experiences, the less able they will be to take part in them. Which in turn will mean a need for more H&S... which mena they'll have even less exposure to... am I going round in circles here...?!

we used to pull a dozen polls about 12 foot long out from the cellar a big barrel of rope and build stuff in the playground of the school we met at .

rope bridges and zip lines etc using the tow hitch on two landies as anchor points ..

But we got told off as there were no crash mats.

or gloves for handling rope or polls

it's more fun if it might hurt

Not that it ever did , apart from one night when the scouts entertained the cubs with a game...and the cub leader panicked and broke her wrist

Game involved putting a plank across a crash mat and getting somebody to stand on the plank..

the person was then told that the plank would be lifted into the air with them on it . they were then blindfolded and two people holding the end of the plank raised it 2 or 3 inches from the mat .

the trick is that you place a third person in front of the one on the plank and place the hands of the plank rider on their shoulders to steady them selves.

as the plank is raised the 2 or 3 inches the third person slowly drops to their knees very smoothly thus making the person on the plank think they are 4 or 5 feet in the air

unfortunately the cub leader panicked and jumped through out her arms and hit the floor with a bump
