Hi all,

Just wondering which diff setup is best for me boy's Disco 1,  10 spline or 24 spline?  8-[

Which one is best in your experienced opinions?

I've fitted 24 spline axles both ends on my Disco1. Rear was from an auto Discovery and the front from a D110. Defenders have large top swivel pins.

Not the strongest combination for hard core useage, but stronger than 10 spline and plenty enough even if you fit a locker to the rear. Front locker is a different can of worms with regard to half shafts and CVs.

You should be able to get both axles in reasonable nick for about £300 pounds the pair......assuming no rebuilding needed  :rolleyes: .......check also the rear radius arms; get a pair of the fatter ones, off a Defender. The early Disco ones are thin and can be bent fairly easily.

Are you thinking of transfer box ratio here Dave? There is no ratio change between defender and disco diffs or 300 and 200tdi diffs for that matter. It would make no difference at all and would not help the engine to turn bigger tyres.

24 spline diffs appeared on 300tdi's (maybe late 200's also, I'm not sure) and are considered to be stronger at the junction with each half shaft due to the increased surface area mating with the half shaft. Odd really, 10 spline shafts look far more chunky and you would normally assume chunky is tougher.

I run a 24 spline (original) on the front and a 10 spline (replacement axle) on the rear. I still have the 24 spliner I removed and plan to refit in the future when I rip the teeth of the 10 spliner. There are differences in length between 24 and 10 spline half shafts, 24 spline are shorter, correspondingly the stub axle and hub set up is also shorter.

Late 200 do have 24 spline I have an L reg 200 on the drive with a set of 24 spline axles. The 24 spline shafts are considered to be tougher. The I.D. of the axle tubes on a 24 spline axle are larger than 10 Spline on the rears. That is why you can't just fit 24 splines and shafts to a 10 spline diff as the half shafts won't go in!

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies, (if it ain't broke don't fix it) springs to mind here. :oops: Just didn't like the nasty noises and juddering of drivetrain so decided to replace it, and sadly discovererd most of the above advice on my own 'cos now I've got to swap the cv swivel thingies from the old shafts to the 10 splines 'cos the stub axles won't go over the last ridge on them.  :twisted:

Just hope when i finish it today all the slack will have gone 8-[
