The problem Ihave is that when I start the car 95 tdi auto It chugs at about 1200rpm for about a minute loads of smoke no power no response to the accelerator pedal then it drops to 800rpm and away I go as if nothing was wrong.Yesterday it just cut out when doing about 40 mph. would not start. Rac came out tried various things even easy start no go .got recovered to local garage. after couple of hours they phoned to say they had found the fault. It was a turbo hose that had collapsed inside .13 more beer tokens to the guy at J L SERVICES Dar lo 40 tokens for the garage and I was away. But still got the no go problem when I start can any body help. Thank you.

jumped a tooth? :? the timing could be out....

where abouts are you ?

I would agree with tdi90,did you do the belt yourself or did it go in somewhere?

If the belt was retarded one tooth it would smoke (grey) badly and performance would be very poor. Advanced a tooth and the engine will rattle.

It's quite easy to accidentally put a timing belt on one tooth out. I take it you have the 300TDi engine? The belt is usually very tight to replace and I fit the belt one tooth out on the cam, which then pulls it back into the timing position when it's tensioned. If your engine was fine before the cam belt was done, then this is likely to be your problem.
This thread is the replacement of the timing belt as a kit. Part of it is missing though - with the cam and crank sprockets on thier respective timing marks - you may need to slacken the three central bolts in the injector pump sprocket in order to fit the drill bit/setting tool. Excess play is then removed by the belt tensioner. The timing will then be as set by the factory.
