Is there a good reason why we should be encouraged to use Myspace?

When we live in an age of surveylence and civil liberties backlashes I wonder why people find it necissary to broadcast every aspect of thier lives to anyone who wants it. Name, age, area, job etc etc, its Identity theft central. I haev expressley forbidden anyone in my family from postign pics of my daughter on such sites.

Also these sites are prime targets for malware and other such nasties so again not such a good idea. I wrote a report on these "social networking" sites for my employer and received about 2 alerts a week about various nasty things on these sites.

Even this forum is suceptable, but not such a prime target!

its up to the individual WHAT they put on stuff like myspace or facebook..

i would imagine

"i like playing with guns and shooting at people randomly" would probably get you a knock on the door just as the milkman is coming!

divulging your innermost secrets/thoughts is also a bad idea

but keeping stuff which isnt used as ammo is ok i guess..

eg my myspace has my diet on it
my blogger has the paris ride

A few yeas back I used to post on Scoobynet a Subaru BBS like this one.  During a discusion about people who boasted about sppeding on the web someone said that it would not be possible/very hard to track down these people.  I then decided to "cyber stalk" him (in a nice way) and within about 1 hours work I was able to email him his home address. This is becuase you peice togeather various bit of info to build a picture of the person.  He had not posted his address anywhere on the web, but I was able to track username to firstanme, then to a site about a local club where anohter post had his lat name, then had his town and name, uised 192.com to get his details down to a few, then did a secret thing, and there we were.

If you search about this sort of thing you will find a lot, like the gits who vandalised an Elise and posted it on you tube, a load of lotus owners then did what I did and got all his info and sent it to the police, some of the larger members of the group paid him a vist as well.

So I choose not to reveal too much about myself.

Hiding your identity might not be all that wise either :(
