Title: Winch disappointment
Post by: thermidorthelobster on July 13, 2008, 20:10:01
Having fitted a winch I don't really need, because events conspired such that it made more sense to fit one than not to, I've been looking forward to winching out the old tree stump in the front garden.

So, this evening I dug around the garage until I found my finest winching gloves;  started up the truck;  cleared the area around the tree stump;  manoeuvred the truck into position across the road;  connected the winch controls;  spooled out the cable;  attached tree strop to stump;  connected stump to cable;  and...

...gave the tree stump a test tug with my hand.  It came straight out in my hand.  Apparently it was so rotten a 5 year old could have pulled it out with a trike, let alone needing a 9000lb winch.

So I spooled the cable back in, disconnected the controls, stowed my finest winching gloves, put the truck back on the drive and came in again.

Oh well...  I hope it's a nice skiddy winter so I can offer to pull people out of ditches

On the plus side, you have now given your winch some basic routine maintenance  :D

You'd be amazed how many winches fail because they are never used or serviced.

I've done the exact opposite...

Expected the stump to pull straight out, but the vehicle just slid along, chocks and all

youd also be surprised to find out how many trucks dont engage low ratio too!
