When i Removed the N/a Engine and fitted the 200 tdi
the temperature guage was continuously going off the scale?
So i Went and Bought a new Sender unit! and it still went off the guage!
Then i put in a new theromstat thinking that was sticking? and off it went again?
next we put a thermometer on top of the thermostat and it read aroundabout 82-84 degrees which is good!
and we summised that it was the guage faulty! So i got a new guage and that went off the scale again?
So now i am at a loose end on soving this one?
has anyone come across this before?
If so what was the Cause? And how did you rectify it?
Thanks in advance Nev...

The older engines run cooler and the colours on the gauge are 'calibrated' (loosley applied term) for specific engines. Hence an NA at 84 degrees would be in the red cos normal is for example 78. Easiest way is to swap the temp gauge for one with 'proper' numbers on instead of a colour scheme that isn't calibrated for your engine, although there has been talk of people putting resistors in the cable. Mine (formerly a TD) sits at the end of normal, just before the red and always has.

Thanks Simon This makes Sense! So one out of a 200/300 Tdi 90/110 should work Ok?
Due to the running Temp of those Engines!
Cheers Nev..

I haven't bothered changing mine so I can't give you a definite answer but it seems reasonable although you may need to make sure you also match it with the correct 200/300 sender as well. The thing is, if you are changing the gauge anyway, why not get a 'proper' one which gives you the correct temperature in degrees rather than a selection of colours? Then you've got a much better knowledge of the engine's parameters. There's plenty on ebay and they aren't too expensive. I seem to remember that the one's with a capillary gauge that actually goes into the water in the pipes are best but I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination.

Check this link scroll down and you will see a picture of a temp sender and adapter, these are what you need and this will work with your original gauge.
http://www.serie2a.dk/English%20series2a/200tdi%20discovery%20in%20a%20Defender.htm
Don't know it this link will work, if not copy/paste into your address bar and it should take you there.
if that don't work the part numbers are,
Sender, PRC 2505
Adapter, ERC 8973
I have done this on my disco conversion and works spot on! this is the second time I have used this method too.
Hope this helps.

You'll have to use a N/A sender with a N/A gauge and a 200 TDi With a 200 TDi. They if i remember correctly they use different resistances and will give dodgy readings. Or as said above use an after market gauge and sender. I use Tim gauges in my track cars and t they work well.

Thanks Fast Hands and Bertie! Points taken
the sender on this engine is the same as a V8 one
The threads are different to my mates 200tdi one?
and where can i buy this Adapter, ERC 8973 ???
Atb Nev..
