Title: Later upper tailgate vs earlier one
Post by: TechnoTurkey on July 17, 2008, 16:09:07
As to be expected, my upper tailgate is a bit rotten, the bottom has more gaffer tape than metal!!

I have picked up an earlieer one in great condition, although it doesnt have central locking and the heater elements only go half way down the glass - neither of which overly concern me.

Other than the above, are there any differences or problems with swapping them?  I need to give it a lick of paint and fill it with waxoyl before I try and fit it.

It works the other way round, my mate put the central locking on his earlier model  ;)

Don't think there is much difference in the top tailgates, it's the bottoms that have totally different latching arrangements. Early has external lock handle and very different shut locks.

If you can get the screws out that hold the handle on, The central locking clamp will transfer with the handle, but you have to take the wiring out from under the trim on the right hand side (as viewed from outside the tailgate) and disconnect at the top right corner.

Good luck

Oh....  and by doing that your lock will be on the replacement..
