Id love to get a tour along a defender line before they stop making it.
Is it a VIP only thing, or can one blag/buy a look round?

You can buy a tour of the factory on it's own or along with a visit to the Land Rover Experience at Solihull.
Don't have the link to hand but look up "Home of the Legend" or LR Experience Solihull and you should find what you need.
Just a point though... it can be pricey!

Wow.. they have restructured the prices since I last looked! Still pretty expensive to drive yourself but nice to see the factory visit is nice and cheap!
IF you want to drive, I'd recommend the experience centre at Eastnor. My wife had a drive there spoiled somewhat by an chauvinist selfish pigwho then complained that he didn't get enough time driving. I called the manager to explain that his staff and the centre were fantastic but the behaviour of the other driver was terrible and a few weeks later... two half day passes turned up in the post!
So guess who has taken a sport thorugh the muck at Eastnor....!

Not really bothered about the driving.... It would be nice, but funds unfortunately do not allow.
I will be getting two tour tickets though :)
Do you get to see all the lines, or one etc How does that work?

Plenty of time before they stop making it.
They'll just find new way to get round the various crash and emissions laws.

I got a 'gold tour' free - you spend the morning on the D3 and RR lines, then lunch, then the afternoon playing with Defender, RR and D3's on the different off road courses. The factory tour was good - but they seem to be limited on where you can go in the factory, they have a set route that you follow.

When I was a kid our school took us on a tour of BL
The best bit was the V8 line
We got to see the panels being pressed and the "new" robot welders and the horrid colours they painted the cars
then a ride in a brand new car over the rumble strip and water splash to the massive carpark
