Title: Brake problems Still !!!
Post by: wizard on July 29, 2008, 15:39:33
A few weeks ago my brakes on the Disco (200 TDI) were soild.
The brakes operated but there was no assistance . I thought the vacuum pump was shot so i replaced it. That didnt solve it so i replaced the servo unit. The brake were ok for 5 miles or so then they gradually came on untill they locked solid.

The only way of releasing them was to take off the vacuum pipe. I spoke to the local independent  LR bloke who said it could be the master cylinder, so i replaced that this morning.

AND ITS STILL THE SAME !!!!!

Brake as Ok for a few miles then gradually come on and stay on...
I have also recently replaced the flexy brake pipes.

It think it is only the front brakes comming on as they are the hottest.

I dont really know where to go from here so any suggestions are welcome.

If you have replaced all the flexible hoses, then the next things has to be siezing/seized calipers.

An experiment on private land would be to clamp the front flexi hose so that you isolate the front calipers and see if you get the same effect.

....thinking on.....could you not replicate the effect of repeated braking just my running the engine and pumping the pedal a few dozen times?? :)

I thought about the calipers but if one was playing up it would pull to one side. When the brakes come on it pulls up straight.
I doubt both front calipers are siezing, but there again stranger things have happened.

I have two plans of action for the morning. After speaking to Hew at HBH land rovers, 1st is to cheak if the spacer is on the servo that went in, the second is to check the calipers.

I think I might have cracked it !!!

On the old servo that i took off last week there was a 10mm spacer that went between the bulkhead and servo. On the new one there was no spacer.
I put the spacer in this morning and after a 8 mile test drive it seems OK.
