Im afraid I am bowing out now due to the diesel price. Ive had the 300TDi ES Disco for 2 years and its broke the bank. Just bought a 2.0 mk2 mondeo ghia X and its already saved me £80 on the car insurance and is saving a load on fuel too !
The Disco will spend the next 5 months being repaired and tinkered with then shes going on eblag to make half its value.
My sincerest thanks go to
Gordon Brown a Prime Minister who nobody voted in
Alistair the little Darling, current chancellor who asks me to pay taxed the purchase of the car, taxes the use of it, taxes the fuel it runs on and the insurance it requires by law.
And finnaly OPEC, the greedy, selfish, **expletive deleted**, **expletive deleted**, **expletive deleted**, **expletive deleted**, **expletive deleted**, **expletive deleted**, wrotten money grabbing **expletive deleted**.
It does however pose an interesting and very "top gear" sort of question. If you were driving down a muddy track and Gordon, Alistair and a key member of OPEC were laying in the way, would you put Diff lock on when you drive over them or not ?
If anyone would like to turn that into a poll then please feel free. Im going to stop moaning now and go polish my mondeo :'( but when the snows come due to the reversal of global warming due to everyone driving thier gee wizzes whos going to tow them out of the drifts ?

Dont do it. had landrovers since i was 18 on and off Sold my last disco 3.9 V8 about 2 years ago :'(, broke my heart at the time and bought peugeot 307SW. within a month i was hankering after another landy, took 20 months to convince SWMBO to get another. That was the longest time without one. Will never be without a landy again.

I know exactly how you feel mate, I have a 40 mile round trip to work every day and the cost of running my Disco was just getting stupid and there was no way I was going to change my job as I love it so much. As a result I brought a little Clio to use for work and I'm saving £35 a week on fuel..!!! In 6 months I'll have saved enough on fuel alone to cover the purchase price of the car, the years road fund licence and over half of the extra insurance costs...!!!
However - I bloody hate having to use it..!!! It might be green but I miss driving my Landy sooooooooo much it hurts. But this is still a better option for me than to part with my beloved friend.
Mark.

I know where you're coming from mate and I sympathize. Theres no way around the ridiculous cost of diesel/veg oil unless you switch to using waste veg oil which for some is just too much trouble. I wonder how long until the Mundaneo becomes to expensive to run?
Hope you change ur mind, get a limited milage insurance policy for about £250, keep it taxed and use it as weekend fun if nowt else.

Limited mileage insurance for £250?? My insurance costs less than that - unlimited mileage, named driver, use in connection with business, protected bonus. NFU - mutual the mutts nuts!
You'll regret selling the Landy!!

I know how you feel I have just sold my disco, the day it left broke my heart, but the running costs where just to high, and I couldn't justify keeping it for a toy so it had to go.so I now have a xsara that dose 50 to the gallon. Is half the road tax and half the insurance costs.but I miss my Discovery.

I'll tell you what else is scary, the price of scrap metals seems to be driving more and more landys to be crushed rather than broken up for parts, I was at the scrappy the other day, the "take apart the cars and get what you want" section was full of people carriers and mundaneos but there on the pile of partially crushed stuff was at least 3 series land rovers, wheels axles engines and gear boxes intact.
:-(

A couple of mates have mentioned NFU also, they reckon there really good with modded motors aswell. I'm due to renew next month and I dont think direct line will be getting my £600 this time.....
Ta for the advice.

Insurance not really too much of a problem, expected to pay £350 plus for it, its the fuel, I put a veg oil heater on it which was great while that was cheap, it actually ran better ! but its more expensive than derv now !
Mondeo is doing round town what the disco did on a run, petrol is some 12p a litre less.
Only gripe I have now is it feels like my ass is dragging on the road as its so low down now !
Keeping hold of the disco for the time being, will review after christmas

The price of cooking oil has been dropping someplaces lately, I just paid £14.61 for 15 litres in Tesco's last week, unfortunately this store is 45 miles from me, so not practicle to make a special trip!
