I have a brownchurch roof rack on my disco 2 and have just put a sheet of chequer plate on it, even SWMBO thinks it looks cool . However unsure how to fix it, do I use rivets or do I bolt it? Any advice would be appreciated

Either - whatever floats ya boat!

small U bolts?

I'd say riv-nuts in the roof rack and then domehead s/s 316 set screws through the plate and into the riv-nut.

What is the existing roof rack like for fitting to? is it tubes or bent sections, square or rounded, any tabs for fixing existing floor etc?
Rivents and rivnuts need a flat(ish) plate to fix to and space top drill the holes, so may need tabs welding on to the roof rack for them to work. If you don't plan on removing it often then rivets are a cheap and easy solution and don't take many seconds to remove with a drill if you do want to remove it on the odd occasion. Rivnuts or Dzus fasteners are good if you plan on remoing the sheet often, but don't realy justify the cost/effort if the sheet is never removed.
Another option may be to bond the sheet on using a PU adhesive, though not so good if you plan on being able to remove the sheet.

Thanks for your repy clbarclay, I have decided to bolt the sheet to the rack using stainless steel bolts with nylon locking nuts. I will not be removing the sheet it will be a permanent feature. Will try and do it today however it has not stopped raining yet so we will see

could always use tec bolts,
just stick a 8mm bit in the end of the drill and it does the rest for you :D
