Title: What welder?
Post by: bambamjj on August 06, 2008, 07:59:48
Hi all.

gonna invest in a welder, but have only ever Arc welded and not done this for 5 or 6 years, can you recommend a welder for use on a Landrover, Only ever used arc welding on Chassis etc and now feel it can be a bit harsh.  should i use Mig Gas or gasless what gauge wire is the gas easy to get hold of etc etc.  And any good places to buy

any thoughts appreciated

i have a sealey 150super MiG. its a good budget welder, but if you want smooth runs every time and a welder that can weld 10mm plate without over heating i wouldn't bother with one. you should always weld with gas, i believe its the law when it comes to auto repare. i use 0.8mm wire you can get .6 but that's like welding with fishing wire and not that good really. if you want a cheap one get a sealey, all the parts are available from the UK and there pretty quick when it comes to sending it out, if you were to invest in a goooooood one get a migatronic, Lincoln or a kemppi, have used them all and rate them very highly.
Clarke is another alternative for the cheap option but i don't think much of them. i think if you get yourself one like mine you'll be fine :D
my two pennies worth
hope that helped

gassless seems to be popping up alot lateley, it isnt as good as a gas shield. it is a flux coated electrode which correct me if im wrong is MMA!
technicley they shouldnt be called migs becasue it stands for manual innert gas.....should be a MI welder.

i bought a gas clarks te 135 turbo and its done everything ive asked of it allso with the colling fan it means i can weld larger welds as the unit isnt overheating     the gas and wire are easy to get hold of most auto shops sell them if that  helps

150, 180, 190, you dont need masses of amps to weld - decent amps combined with a good duty cycle are important.
