Just browsing this page on the BBC website
80Things.... (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7544985.stm)
Some of them get to me too, with a moistening of the eyes.
Such as;
2. "When Richard Todd quietly says he has some letters to write and walks through the gates at RAF Scampton in The Dambusters."
6. "The poppies falling in silence from the roof of the Albert Hall at the Festival of Remembrance is one which gets me: the sheer waste of life"
19. "There is only one time when it is excusable for a man to cry; when his faithful hound sacrifices itself to save his master. Truly heartbreaking."
22. "Visiting the battlefields in Normandy and the graves of soldiers who were only boys had me and my husband weeping."
26. "The video to Hurt by Johnny Cash, it only seems to make men cry, the harder the man the more it gets to them." (good, but not my favourite track of his)
33. "Dedication to the Fallen during the Festival of Remembrance: 'They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.'
Gets me every time."
39. "The strangest thing that has ever set me off was listening to the radio and hearing Concorde land for the very last time. I don't even like planes but it made me blub." (certainly a sad sound)
52. "Spitfires, Concorde and the roar of a Merlin or Deltic engine will always start me off. Such power and such grace. (too true)
53. "Listening to Belgian firemen play Last Post at the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres. Played every night since soon after the end of World War I. Stopped only during the German occupation in WWII and started again as soon as they left."
56. "What always gets me is the veterans on Remembrance Sunday. In their wheelchairs, shaking with old age and still making it to give respect to their old mates. After having lived a compromised life for 80 years or so (for some of them) with the trauma of the memories and nightmares that don't go away, now that is sacrifice."
78. "Visiting the Imperial Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery in Oosterbeek, The Netherlands, and seeing the rows of headstones marking the graves of those who died in Operation Market Garden during WW2 is a highly emotional experience, and one's vision can get a bit watery at the thought of so many young lives wasted."
And, a few of mine
When our daughter Amelia was born over 3 weeks early (she's now 7)
Watching the 'Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight', be it overhead or simply on TV
Lance Armstrong winning his first Tour after his Cancer recovery (& being pleased by the other 6 victories)
Seeing and hearing 'Just Jane', the Panton brothers Lancaster taxiing at their museum at East Kirkby
The last time I saw LNER 4472 on the summer specials (York - Scarborough), the sound and the smell.
Seeing my (sadly missed) dog Jacks ashes, & his picture everyday.
The price I pay to fill the Landy & XKR up (2 lots of bl**dy tax on it too!!)
-
You have hit the nail on the head there my good man
-
Although a female who will not be seen to cry I agree with you totaly.
My own personal one's would be if I may
Seeing my beloved 200tdi Disco get towed away to the scrappies
Hearing a Lancaster fly over the house, on many lovely ocassions.
Watching my beloved grandfather still strungling at 90 and feeling helpless (He is one of those war heroes with demons)
Lastly catching sight of the photo's/memories of dogs and horse that I hope I meet again one day.
-
pretty powerful stuff.
A few of mine
1) The loss of my parents.
2) Having the mother of an RTA victim thank me at the coroners inquest, for being with her daughter when she died.
3) Going to the place where my grandfather fought on the Ypres Salient.
4) When a pet dies.
5) Having to deal with abuse of kids and animals.
6) Representing the Constabulary and laying a wreath at the Menin Gate during the Last Post Ceremony.
7) Being asked by my eldest son to be his Best Man at his wedding.

I've had that myself, as did all the staff on duty on one occassion

Yes abusing kids and animals makes me weep as well but its just somthing we all have to do from time to time!
The last post certainly made me well up a little. as well as looking at all the names carved into the arch and allt he gravestones.

Incredible.... sadly I attended a particular serious RTA where a pair of brothers died.... the parents came to our station to thank us for trying to save their lives, I tell you that a few of us had tears in our eyes :(

after the above this is going to sound stupid but when they built that rocket powered jet train in scrap heap challence it brought a lump to my throat, I was glad to see we still live in a county where people can "make things" and that the H&S obsessed, envionmental band wagon miss quoting Mc Jobbers who have to get the main dealer to put air in thier tyres have not yet taken over the country.
Well done to all men in sheds.
-
Mines are:
Watching an 8 year old girl die in my arms in Northern Ireland when she was hit by a petrol bomb which was intended for me. I have never been able to forgive myself for that.
When my pet German Sheperd Max died.
Watching the Avro Vulcan fly gets me every time.

I was in Malta in 2005 and was privileged to be stood in the gardens above the Grand Harbour to watch a 'fly past' and ariel display by a Spitfire & a Hurricane. The 1st time since the war that these planes were seen in the skies over Malta.
There were many moist eyes that day! it's a day I will never forget

I can't listen to the hymn eternal father without welling up. It's been played on too many sad family occasions.

Seeing other people's pain get me, its even worse when there is nothing I can do to take the pain away.
-
Seeing the disappointment on my children's faces if they have been let down by someone or when their confidence has taken a knock, always hurts and no matter how hard you try to prevent it from happening, it always does, all a part of growing up I guess. :?

hi all. anything that shows our brave veterans from any conflict past and present.been in france for the 60th anniversary of the d day landings. watching the poor police dog handler on "send in the dogs" whose dog passed away. and when i have a moment alone the thought that one day my dog clyde will no longer be with me, he's only 3 at the min, sad i know

Evening All,
Not afraid to say I have cried my eyes out several times this week, my old faithfull black Lab died in his sleep last Friday, he nearly made 15 years old, we had him before the kids, infact he was our first kiddie as we had him from a pup.He was my best mate, and I really do miss him greeting me home from work each night, well I buried him in the garden last Saturday, it was a hard task, at least we are happy that we know where he lays that he his still close to us.The girls have taken it bad and the missus, I know we will never replace the old boy, god bless him.

My old man was and extremely keen fisherman, out every weekend with him fishing buddy, no matter waht the weather.
I can safely say this was his life.!!!
Four years ago, he was diagnosed with cancer, and 6wks later, he was gone, and this song was played at his funeral............... only have to hear the first couple of notes..........
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRTXnAxlxTc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRTXnAxlxTc)
the funeral did get a lift, and a laugh at the end though,,,, the last song, one of his, and my favourites, Status Quo, Rocking All over The World!! Had people smiling as they were leaving.....

My best friend was killed about 4 years ago in a bike accident, he was like my brother, took it really hard and went completely off the rails and its only just recently ive started feeling any sort of emotion again, i just constantly felt numb, ive been with Jess a while and we are both deeply in love, got a ring just waiting for the right time to propose.
Also shes now 15 weeks pregnant and her mum sent some baby grows and a pair of boots shed nitted and seeing them made me cry. it was the first time id showed any form of proper emotion since just after my friends funeral.
I know it sound like a dodgy cliche but it seriously felt like a massive weight had been lifted, its amazing to feel that Jess finally got me to open up after such a long time of not wanting to get close to anyone incase they were taken away :)

Life is a real challenge sometimes mate, and I hope it all goes well for you both and the little one :) Truly becoming a parent is one of life's great experience's.

Watching My ex girlfriends 12 year old daughter who had cerebal Palsy. Die in Alderhey after her shunt became blocked. For those of you with TV images of someone silently slipping away as the machines are turned off. the reality couldn't be further from the truth. The body fights for every last breath. 12 hrs in this case. And attending her funeral a few weeks later. are the worse moments of my life and still bring tears.

Was a scary thought being a dad at 21 but im really looking forward to it. Me Mam had me at 16 and she thinks im mad having one this young but its going to happen one day and at least ill be young enough to spend a lot of my life watching them grow up and be able to see grandchildren gow up hopefully aswell :D

Red,
Cant imagine anything worse mate, me Mam used to work at alderhey and couldnt do it, she said exactly the same thing, that they dont just pass away as soon as the machines are switched off, they fight it untill the very end. Especially with kids, paerents arent suposed to outlive theyre kids. Everyone has noticed how much ive changed since finding out mine is on the way. smokings coming to a stop and me driving has got a lot less aggressive! when theres something like children to focus on everything is shown in a new light.
Thoughs are with you and your ex mate. ;)

Reading some of the things that have been put up here, (Redhand, Padjy, Nev to name a few) have been moving.
I had to make the decision for the second time in 8 months to put someone else's pet down (first one being a horse due to colic), while it has been in my care. The Child doesn't get back from holiday for another two weeks. I know that Oscar will be missed by all the family.
Its going to hard when I tell them.
-
Reading this thread has had me close to tears as well.
I shed a tear watching East Enders earlier, when Wellard died.
Another occasion occurred when my seven week old son, whose eyes lit up, or who could turn up the corners of his mouth, looked at me and put the two together for the first time.
-
Nicole Cooke (http://www.nicolecooke.com/) taking the gold in the Womens Road Race moistened the eyes a bit

Reading this thread and realizing that two years ago to day was when my life changed for ever, the day that i was told i had cancer and at 21 i felt my life was over for ever. Two years on after a few failed treatments i still have cancer but im still fighting. The only way is up or so im told!

That's the only way!!
If Lance Armstrong can beat it (& he was only given a 20% chance of survival at one stage!), so can you.
Okay..... perhaps you're not going to win 7 Tour de Frances , (& compete in multiple Marathons) after your recovery, but you'll win your own battles with it!

Real tears today:
I just heard that a well loved, admired and outrageous fool of a friend has just passed away.
A sad loss for all of the underground community.

A good choice of vids, mate. I heard the first one not long after my eldest started his first tour over there. Nearly crapped myself everytime I heard the words 'bomb, shooting, Northern Ireland' in the same sentence.

Mother dying; saying goodbye to the dog before parents took him to vet for the last time; and at the end of Schindler's List I was in floods of tears, in the middle of the cinema.
I have to bite my tongue when kids are dying on the news, and oddly enough I quite often get a bit emotional when an ambulance goes past with the lights on :-.
-
Gresh's little ones set me off :'(
The little kid (2 or 3 years old) crawling through barbed wire in africa to get away from genaside.
watching the sun come up the first day of my eldest sons life through the window of special baby care wondering if he'd see another.
Basically anything with Kids being ill treated or cheated...
Oh and great people getting sick and bad'ens being fit as a fiddle
OY !! Panda you fat yet???

When I took Jack (http://pets.webshots.com/photo/1536465733047309372ltXpxc), I ended up 'in floods' as was the wife
When I first found out he had Bowel Cancer, I ended up breaking down on the shoulder of one of the Sisters & being sent home on compassionate grounds (I think that was partly to save me saying something to any 'oxygen thief' patients we might have had that particular night)
I quite often get a bit emotional when an ambulance goes past with the lights on :-.
Blimey, if we did that everytime one arrived
Mindst you, it's a cunning plan, they might think they've upset us & go findanother Hospital to drop off at :-k :-k
-
A few weeks ago, a young (23 months old) child in our village (Robbie Jones) was rushed into hospital with suspected meningitis.
He has just been discharged from hospital and allowed to come home after treatment and surgery for this awful condition.
He has had to have both legs amputated, one above and one below the knee, and has also had to have the ends of his fingers on one hand removed.
this picture of his older sister 'nursing' him while in hospital has caused many a tear in the village!
there are lots of fundraising events going on for Robbie & the Meningitis Trust (http://www.robbiesnight.co.uk/index.htm)

I think for me it would have to have been the deaths of Richard Burns and Colin McRae. Both talents cut short well before their time.
I read recently that Markko Martin (whose co-driver Michael "Beef" Park was killed in a crash on the Rally GB in 2005) is going to team up with Robert Reid (Burns' co-driver for most of his career) to drive the course car on a forthcoming event. I suspect there'll be more than a few spectators feeling a lump in their throats, especially as they'll be driving an ex-McRae Impreza 555.

Aye that carries weight with me and the death of Barry Sheen, one of the best 500cc riders ever, mind you he also did a good line in formula 500 commentary as well.
