Title: My Gulf-spec grille
Post by: Disco Matt on August 07, 2008, 16:00:59
After some months I've finally got around to buying one - P A Blanchard on ebay, very fast delivery (next day). Here it is:

I've now found that my car is not the colour I thought it was - the LR dealer it came from several years ago described it as "Niagara Grey". Well I had Halfords mix Niagara Grey and as you can see it's not quite right. I rather like the effect though, and won't be rushing out to redo it.

I spent a good chunk of the afternoon trying to find somewhere more dramatic than my driveway for the photo, all my favourite spots were infested with sheep (both the woolly and human sorts ).

Glad to see you got one.

You might be interested in this thread about my grille (you are already in there somewhere)...........

do these grills help cooling or just look good?

They are designed for the Gulf - the mesh gives maximum air flow into rad/intercooler when compared to original wide plastic slats.

I also think they look good too.......

I'd like to know too.  The V8 model's autobox seems to sometimes get a bit warm when going very slow and the go pedal is being used quite a bit.

EDIT:  Blast, reply made when I was typing.

Thanks Rob - yep, wanted one after seeing your thread! They still have six left so if anyone else fancies one I'd say to go for it now.

Not sure about cooling - I think the air coming out of the vents was cooler, but the engine temp gauge didn't move (still just below halfway). I know the true Gulf spec Discos had some other stuff too, like a bigger viscous fan, different fan cowls, bigger radiator, different oil cooler, assorted extra cowls and vents, and a bigger alternator.

Apparently it is supposed to improve aircon function, but mine is out of action until I get a replacement idler pulley as I've taken the drive belt off to escape the noise of the knackered one. I've also heard tales of it reducing fuel consumption, although I'm not expecting any change there.

Where did you get your green oval badge from? I did investigate prising the one off the old grille but it didn't look as though it would come off intact.

Here's where mine came from:

Six left at time of typing, and that's about a quarter of the price LR were charging.

Of course you can - I won one of Jake's favourite winch bumpers (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220255170471) on ebay.

It came from a guy in Buxton, my parents (who live in Stoke on Trent) picked it up for me. I still haven't seen it yet but they are due down at the end of the month so I can finally get my hands on it. The one in the photo is just a 300 bumper with the end caps cut and the number plate plinth removed. The rings are lifting eyes - there to fill two holes - the bumper is not strong enough for towing/recovery.

i,m quite liking them but you wouldnt see it behind my a bar :-k

I'm planning to add this A Bar (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220240619325) but will eventually swap the spots for some Light forces. My folks collected it from Liverpool and I've not seen this either.

I shopped about for a flat backed one on ebay and ordered it. When it arrived it had two hollow spiggots on the back. I used a flat plate with two holes and then screwed into the spigots through the mesh. It was a "one off" from a seller so you would need to search a bit more. Watch out for sellers who supply the shiney green bit but with no back!

Thanks for that - I'll keep eyes open. As it's a metal grille I can fit a replica Series-style one of course...

You can't have chrome - it never looks right on these!  Not sure about hazard stripes either - might look a bit like an earthmover with those on the front?
