Title: Taxi for my landrover please
Post by: Saffy on August 09, 2008, 20:07:07
Went down to Woking to see my mate and pick up a transfer box and ended up being taken home to Wiltshire on the back of a recovery truck

Matey want to show me a local fording down pennypot lane before I headed home, we pull over at the ford to hear horrid noise coming from my engine bay. Turns out to be the alternator bearing on a hefty rumble.

Decided to make a run for home and got about 1 minute down the lane when the alternator seized right up and started to cook the serpetine belt. So nothing much you can do , no cheats with a serpetine belt that I know of. So out with the RAC and its landrover taxis - membership paid for itself yet gain

Turns out the recovery truck tech was none other than mudclub member OZ ! so big shout out to him, cheers for the chat on way home

So new alternator time AGAIN!

Actually, there is a cheat. cable ties just skip the alternator pully.

okay, the cableties form a loop bracket to take up the extra on belt and it slips over or what? I'd be interested to hear other hacks where that belt is concerned - to get me outta poop sort of thing. I was wondering if I could have loosened the alternator pulley nut so that the pully  spun free on the shaft as there is no key way on these, that might have worked. I have had the powersteering pump seize too and that took the belt out completely within seconds. I carry spare (old) belts.

what im saying is make a belt out of cable ties, but just skip the alternator. and the end of the day, yes your battery wont charge, but it could get you home.

I brielfy considered replacing the alternator with this one

http://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php?xProd=81880&xSec=5497&jssCart=c441835539c2d00f9b98060f2972b17a (http://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php?xProd=81880&xSec=5497&jssCart=c441835539c2d00f9b98060f2972b17a)

but thought it would be a waste as no one will see the gold plating and the encrusted diamonds it must be finished with.
