Title: Steering box
Post by: topless matt on August 20, 2008, 19:02:11
My 1996 defender 300tdi steering box has failed      Any idea how to tell weather it is a 3 4 or 6 bolt model ?

Pretty sure it'll look like this link....
http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/DEFENDER/Steering/PAS_box_with_drop_arm_-_4_bolt_-_recon_-_RHD_(sold_on_an_exchange_basis_-_price_includes_100.00_GBP_exc._VAT_surcharge).html

as far as i'm aware, the number of bolts is referring to how many bolts hold the 'top' on...... ie, the one in the link is a four bolt, as in... four bolts on the top... i'm pretty sure that by 96 they were all 4 bolt......

3 bolt are imperial and the strongest.

4 bolt and 6 bolt are metric, I've only ever seen 6 bolt on Defenders.

I believe the 3 bolt was only used on 90's and 110's prior to the 'Defender' name being used. So it should be one of the metric ones.

Sorry, I meant I hadn't seen the 6 bolt anywhere other than Defender, rather than Defenders has nothing but 6 bolt.

I think the earlier One Ten  and Ninety may have used the 3 bolt, RRC started to go Metric around the time it went EFi, most of the suspension arms were uprated or had heavier metric threads.  Probably has more to do with how much develoment cash was available than anything else

AFAIK the 4 bolt became the only on left in production, therefore the default fitment to all LR products.  Anyone know if the 6 bolt had a different ratio?
