Title: Front turret ring - bolt sheared!!! Update 01/09/08
Post by: bambamjj on August 25, 2008, 20:43:54
:'( Just seeing how the turret ring nuts were for removal, trying to think ahead for future work, slight tweak with a socket & ratchet drive and sheared straight of with out any effort  so only secure with 3 now am i ok to drive around for week or so like this, only be comute to work about 80 miles a day, no off roading....

Just need to break news to swmbo about £'s and another day out the back ignoring kids to repair and order turret rings, turrets, shocks and might as well do springs whilst its all out.,

Does anyone know if i can just support chassis lower diff slightly and then open up further with jack to get springs out?  did this to the rear this weekend and it was very successful.

Once again any help/advice appreciated.

Fancy selling what ever parts you have?

Dont supply fitting service too   Just want to take to Portsdown Hill and torch at this moment in time thought the work had finished for a while... :'(

I've kept what I took off mine to lift it.........

Turrets - grubby but solid.
Turret rings - ditto.
Dampers - only being kept incase it ever goes back to standard (I wouldn't use them by choice).
Springs - only being kept incase it ever goes back to standard (I wouldn't use them by choice).

As I am writing this, suddenly started to doubt if I kept the turrets.

Let me know what you might be interested in and I'll let you know.

Many thanks, ordered whole lot from Paddocks today, standard fronts, pro-comp shocks, new turrets and rings.  Just hoping the pixies will fit them for me one night if i leave the tools and parts out, more than likely be the thieving goblins tho...

A large dose of Plusgas will help a lot when it comes to removing the remaining nuts - much better than WD40 for shifting rusty stuff!

When you look at the end that bolts down it looks as if the metal is delaminating, even though it isnt, if you know what i mean  :(

Land rover, just like a woman, cant live with them cant live without them

Well rebuilt the front this weekend, spent the week driving round with unistrut & drop rods holding turrent down

Sheared of all remaining turret ring nuts, got 8mm drill and went straight thru lower shock absorber nut and thread, then sheared that off, took hole assembly out, max 10 minute job to remove turret and shocks that were very corroded  :D

Wheels off jack between chasis and diff, springs removed,  brush down with wire brush, liberal amount of tetroseal and then re-assembled.  Max 2 hours including shouting at the kids to stop stealing new nuts and washers and putting down the drain

And the difference is phenomal.  Despite all the stress it has been worth it and the kids managed to escape from the shed just in time go out for a test drive.

Thats it no more repairs until next year  [-o<
