please help people
my k reg 200 tdi disco is making some clunking noises, sounds like back axle area :-k
not looked under it yet just wondered what to check for when i get time. seems bad when trying to pull away slowly (disengaging clutch) and slowing down (engaging clutch). gearbox seems fine.
any ideas would be a great help thanks

i would say a UJ failing, the diff bearing or a half shaft most likly
have you lost drive?? and had to engage diff lock??
might be worth having a look underneath whilst some one inside taking up drive to check what moves and clunks, **** WARNING **** watch fingers and hands in moving parts of prop, and make sure you dont get run over if you are laying under vehicle whilst jolting clutch ****

Everything works fine but clunk slowly getting worse, people keep saying it could be the gearbox even though the clunk is coming from the back and they have not actually seen the vehicle. people always suspect the worse.
Will get under it as soon as possible to have a look but only if i can find somebody sensible enough to work the controls [-X

worn out Trailing arm bushes or A frame joint will cause a clunk at the back end taking up drive ...
-
they were going to be my next guess's

I'm just hoing that my A frame joint holds out until I'm ready to do the boot floor as it will be easyer to get to from the top ;)
though I have now kyboshed that havn't I

Excessive backlash in the diff?

Thanks guys, you've given me a start point, will check those parts first.
Hopefully i can cure it over the next week during a few days off work

Had it quick look this morning, put it in gear and rocked it, the worst clunk is coming from the rear diff, is this easy to replace or shall i just get a complete axle.it's a late 200 tdi with 24 splines. Does anyone know of any other options( rebuild etc ) don't want to spend a fortune
thanks for any advice

The rear diff is just about the easiest large component to change there is!
Assuming you can source a diff your happy with, as they are pretty expensive new, it's simply a case of undoing the prop shaft at the rubber doughnut, pulling the half shafts out on each wheel about 6 inches and undoing the dozen or so bolts around the diff (after draining the oil that is!).
Fitting the replacement is just the reverse process, remembering to top up the diff oil before taking the beastie out for a run.
Check the state of the rubber propshaft doughnut as it'd be a good opportunity to change it if it's looking tired.
All the best

Got it!
it's the aframe joint, got my jimmy bar and gave it a wriggle, lots of movement and a clunk, replacing this will be a good start point. Is this an easy job, will i need special tools and will it cost much for the parts.
thanks any advice appreciated

Special tools:
Rear suspension upper link bolts = 1 3/16" AF socket.
Upper link to ball joint = 19mm sockets both sides and can be vey tough to split.
Rear suspension trailing arm chassis mounts = 1 3/16" AF socket.
Rear suspension trailing arm to axle = 24mm socket.
plus gas or similar, BFH. If it wont come out maybe a grinder/hacksaw etc. Jack and stands obviously.
