Title: Car auctions
Post by: JumboBeef on August 28, 2008, 13:08:04: Has anyone here ever been to a car auction? I'm going to one tomorrow, which sells 4x4s, just for a look....but if I do want to buy, what/how should I do it and what should I watch out for?

Post by: stuntman on August 28, 2008, 13:37:37: I would say, never buy at your first auction, and find out the fees at the reception, taxes and buyers premiums etc, if you need to register.

Don't be afraid to crwal all over the car inside and out when it is in line to go under the hammer.

I've gone along to a couple of auctions as a spectator. It struck me that a lot of stuff was going for more than you could buy it for in Autotrader. I didn't see any bargains; plus of course you have the risk that you'll buy a crock.

That said, I know other people who have seemingly got themselves some good deals, although more regular cars than 4x4s.

It's in Carlisle. (http://www.borderwaymotorauctionsltd.hpi.co.uk/dealer/) They have a V reg Discovery 2.5 Td5 ES and a P reg Range Rover 2.5 DSE: I wonder how much they will go for....

Well, I went and it was very interesting. The V reg Disco (very nice) went for Â£3,300. They didn't offer the RR. There was an M reg Disco V8 LPG, and bit battered on the outside but OK inside (perfect for off road) with MOT which went for....Â£210!

Smart looking LWB Tropper (T reg I think) which went for Â£700.

There was also an 05 Mondeo which sold for Â£1,500.

There were lots of others which sold, but I didn't make notes.
