Post by: henryandlesley on September 08, 2008, 16:39:54
hi all I am thinking of doing a delivery service nation wide for all of us who can not collect or deliver them bits at the moment i have a transit tipper but before I spend out on loads of vans and employ people to drive them I want to see if it is worth while I have done an estimate of cost which will be £15 per item to anywhere in england wales and scotland but any to go to the highlands or irland would work out more

dont forget to factor in fuel, insurance (business use) goods in transit insurance, and maybe even public liability insurance - it all adds up - previous employer had £5,000,000 goods in transit ins, and public liability of £5,000,000
plus his fuel bill trebled in the last 2 years

I think you'd have big problems getting into the courier business at the moment. The only way our local small firm seems to keep going is due to their having some form of contract with the big players (eg ANC), whereby they handle the final leg of the delivery to the customer. It seems that the smaller operators are being pushed out as they are less able to absorb the increased running costs of the last few years than the bigger firms.

You will need to consider what your competitors are charging too - £15 seems to be a common ebay P&P rate for large or heavy things (eg a lone wheel). Most online stores will charge customers between £5 and £10 postage, which has to cover both their own time and materials to pack the items and get them ready for the courier to pick up as well as the courier charge.

Have a look at parcle2go as it would be hard to beat their price, they will pick up your items as well.

You might do better taking on piecework, perhaps providing car transportation services for peeps on here, but do invest in a proper car trailer, capable of moving a 3000kg Range Rover, it'd have to be an part aluminium or alloy frame to stay under the 3500kg tow limit.  Unless you move into LGV, including trailers.

So many do tend to think they can go out and buy a towing dolly or A Frame, and do it on the cheap, until they get pulled over.
