i have just brought a 200tdi disco got a problem with drive only drives in diff lock makes a horrible noise in hi or low range could anyone give me an idea what is wrong with it please
-
Sounds like either a diff or half shaft broken mate, which end is the noise coming from?
-
the noise is coming from the front its like clattering and banging
-
If you jack up the truck (front), one side at a time and attempt to rotate the wheel with 1st gear and diff lock engaged there should be resistance - if there isnt you've found the side with the problem. If theres no resistance either side, its the diff. If its not the whole diff then:
Getting the inner driveshaft out of the front axle requires you to remove the wheel bearing, stub axle and outer drive shaft. If the outer shaft and CV/swivel are ok, try to remove the inner shaft - you may get just a piece if its broken. From then on your talking taking the diff out to remove the snapped piece.
Let us know what you find and good luck!

One quick thought, make sure your front prop hasn't broke...
-
Sounds like a CV joint has died.
Do as Stu said above, and check the front prop for rotation.
If one front wheel fails to turn the front prop then chances are that is the CV that has croaked.
wizard

i have jacked it up this morning put it in first gear and diff lock like you told me passenger side had resistance then i tried the drivers side no resistance could turn the wheel right round with a crunching noise

Start pulling it apart, either the outer shaft, CV joint or inner shaft has snapped.

thanks i will start pulling it apart tonight if i get home early enough from work and i will let you no how i get on
-
finally found time to take it apar its the piece that links the prop to the diff that gone the bearings that hold the piece in place
-
The piece that links the prop to the diff, do you mean the universal joint?
Like two metal circles with an x shape piece joining them together that bolts to the diff flange?
I think you may benefit from buying a haynes manual, there pretty good for finding your way about the truck when you're starting out.
