i want to make a front winch bumper, nuts to it if im paying over £1k for one

can i drive around with no bumper?  aslong a the number plate is shown?

As long as no sharp edges/bolts/chassis/whirly engine bits are protruding, you should be ok. But don't quote me on it, or I shall deny all knowledge and blame the Goblins.

I strongly suspect your insurers will not pay out if you hit something (or something hits you).

Which proves my point about goblins. One of those hits you, and they get away with it! If you were an insurance company and someone phones up and says, "Excuse me, I've just been hit by a Goblin, am I insured?" What are you going to say?
Its obvious really. You're going to say "was a green one?"
Its all rather confusing really.

I thought you were implying that insurance people are goblins!

My "or so I hear" advise is that you should specifically tell your insurance co and make sure its listed on your policy.  If you did have a prang they would look round the car for any excuse possible not to pay so if I were you id make it 100% crystal in writing.
