Ok guys and gals, this could be fun/interesting/alarming!
As some of you are aware we are expecting a baby boy soon and we are struggling to settle on a name. We seem to be able to come up with several girls names easily, but I suspect he wouldn't appreciate being called Sophie or Rebecca  We like the idea of something a little unusual, but not so strange as it will cause him aggro later in life.
When we do sit down and try to think of a name we usually find it degenerates pretty quickly into pure farce. So we'll see how long it takes on here
Over to you........
-
Call him
"'; drop database;"
That'll be fun :)
-
whats your surname
you dont want something like
hunt
and first name is michael
think about it
which is why our son is called james* and our surname is bowen ;)
* - not really

-
Given our surname and the fact my wife is from Scottishland, we did think of Fraser. One for the petrolheads on here :D
-
SUE
runs and hides
-
old "young ones" scene....."SHUT UP or <edit> (http://www.mud-club.com/forum/index.php/topic,42831.0.html) "

charlie
are imo all no-nos
the names wont be individual and everyone will think you got the name from a celebrity (never a good thing)
-
I suspect when he gets to school there will be a fair number of children named after Olympians - how about Chris(topher) as in Hoy?
-
shabba
levi
pato
choice is endless
-
Russel??
there can be only one

our oldest girl is called HOPE,then the youngest daughet POPPY-LOU, and my little lad called MASON.....unusal names , but there are the is another POPPY in her class, and another girl called HOPE......as for MASON....we where away in Turkey a few weeks back, a new family arrive and the daughter of family shout at her brother...."MASON stop splashing me" , which was quite comical, with our little lad called the same

How about Stuart,, ok so its my name :)
-
I told my wife we should have either Horatio or Isambard (Seafarer & Engineer).
She wouldn't agree - I wonder if that's why we had girls?
-
ROBERT
Get's my vote.
Shortened to Rob is better.
IMO I don't like being called Bob, Bobbie, Bobby, Robb, Robby, Robbie
-
Ethan
Morgan
Lucius (think harry potter)
-
Don't forget to Google your choice before the birth. You don't want to find out after the event that he shares his name with somebody infamous.
Also think of how kids will shorten the name in the playground. We wanted to use William (family links) but it would have been shortened to a rather dubious Will Steele. I suppose it is only as bad as my "burglar's name" - Rob Steele.
-
we have trystan and eva easy to spell and easy to say plus not easy to shorten which is handy, our nickname for both are longer than their proper names
hmm
-
ROBERT

yes i quite agree, but not Robby. thats just gay.
-
Ewan
Ethan
Jarrod
Bradley
Are a few you dont hear often.... have you thought of going down the route of foreign names?
-
Give him a proper name, no fancey crap. The novelty of having a kid with an oddball name like 'ruben' will wear off anyway and then they have to live with it.
I always figured if i had kids i would pick names from the simpsons.
-
Fraser :D
-
my two are called
Ryan Patrick
and
Kyle samuel
(Ryan for clear and present danger, Patrick was the father in law , Kyle as in Kyle Rees the hero in terminator , Samuel as in Sam Elliot from Road house coolest guy on the planet )
if we had another (which we won't ) we were going for Connor
-
Ewan
Ethan
Jarrod
Bradley
Are a few you dont hear often.... have you thought of going down the route of foreign names?
the problem is that these names will become popular, so you cant win
people might associate ewan with ewan mcgregor and bradley with mr wiggins and ethan i know loads with it...
better sticking to something you all like
our daughter was supposed to be
aoife
eva in gaelic but my mum said she would have trouble explaining it
-
well my 2 sons are
CHRISTOPER JONATHON
and
AIDEN JACK
and yes the spellings are correct lol
-

The six million dollar man
I think a lot of mums had a crush on Lee Majors :-> (http://kylecomics.blogsome.com/images/LeeMajors1.jpg)
-
my son is called Jack Thomas we chose these cause they are strong names :D but i did work with a guy called DICK BROWNING
-
dave is quite rare.my parents gave a lot of thought about my name :^o

Ring TRT @ Somercotes, http://www.yell.com/ucs/UcsSearchAction.do?ssm=0&scrambleSeed=9882358&keywords=&companyName=trt&location=de55&M=0&x=40&y=8 Micheal Hunt is the Head of maintenance and prefers to be called Mick ;)
Back to the subject in hand....... Our boy is Erik Lewis ........ cause we like it  and everyone has there opinion some love it some hate it, but he answers to it    he only 18 months ;)
-
Our two boys are called Barnaby Andrew and Oscar Anthony. Our daughter is named Matilda Emily. It took us ages to decide/agree as we wanted quite classic names that weren't too common. We're both very happy with the names we chose for them and they suit them very well. Number four is now on the way and we seem to have exhausted all of the names we liked, maybe we'll call it #4!

Nothing wrong with William. A "good, strong name", to quote Capt Jack Sparrow, which fits in anywhere from kings to coal miners. Think of the second in line to the throne, and my grandad, known as Bill, was a miner and proud of it. My son's called William.
You could call him something like Tarquin  I named my first RRC after a particularly revolting little brat who was running backwards and forwards in Tesco once, making a total nuisance of himself. They looked like a bit of a rough family and I think she may have picked the name to make him sound a bit posher.
Unusual names ... hmm. I came across one family whose eldest daughter was called Mercedes - OK, I thought, the car was originally named after a girl. Her sister was called Portia :|. Their younger brother was called - wait for it - Cosworth. Oh dear . (There was a fourth child, to a different father, called Lauren.)
-
When my son was born, my ex and I spent hours thinking of names, eventually we settled on a combination of his grandfather's middle names and we came up with Tom Charles, names that we both found acceptable - not only that I knew that both of them were historicaly good family names (Tom is the 3rd person in my family line to carry this name), on my side of the family there have been countless Charles's.
If you want a good strong name that is slightly off beat you could try Knight. A friend of my sister called her lad that, mind you their surname is steel - so it came out as Knight Steel.
-
We have a Jake Peter, Jake after a character in a Jilly Cooper book I was reading whilst pregnant and Peter was his Grandad's name.
Our youngest is called Lewis Christian, Lewis after the Scottish Island (my Mom is Scottish) and Christian is his dads name.
-
Well, of the suggestions so far, I do like Ethan and Ewan. Sarah likes Connor and Oscar, but I'm not so sure. Callum is one we both quite like. Has the Scottish connection and is unusual without being silly.
As said before, all names go through phases of being popular and then fall out of favour.
-
We picked Joseph for our lad, though it's always just Joe, a proper blokes name!
Gav
-
Ours are R'Vanneth Tia and Leith Thomas
Both names suit them ;-)
-
my sons name is zacchaeus or zacc for short i,ve not come across another yet, its a bit of a religoius name but im in no way religious just took a liking to the name and it was different
-
when i was expecting the twins, and before we knew that they would be girls, we thought long and hard about boys names, geoff liked dominic & benedict (but i didn't want to name them after monks that brewed alcohol), we then thought about matthew (after matthew flinders who will mean nothing to you but a lot to south australians!) and then found out it was girls to our relief!
regards
ela
-
Ahhh Flinders now there's a good name, yes I get the connection, afterall if you're going to go THAT route LENNIE would also be a good name lol.
-
Yep, Joseph!
I always wanted to be called Joseph.... no idea why but I still do! Too late now... I'm 54!
You need to think what the kids at school will change or shorten it to... because they will!
Joseph Nash... Joe Nash... Big Joe... Little Joe... Just Joe! It works for any age and still sounds traditional and strong!
-
Rover
-
Rover
Thought it was a baby boy, not a puppy
-
I told my wife we should have either Horatio or Isambard (Seafarer & Engineer).
She wouldn't agree - I wonder if that's why we had girls?
I suggested Isambard, if ours had turned out to be a boy.
The look I got shut me up immediately!
She's an Amelia; after the aviator, or that's the story I'll tell her (implying that 'the sky's the limit')
I also suggested Lance, if the off-spring had been a boy (as in Armstrong)
-
I was named after the Armstrong that landed on the moon :D
-
Mark Nash.
Its the way forward.
-

What about Emrys? Shortens to Em?
-
Now we are running into a different problem...... too many suggestions and too much choice  Thanks though and it hasn't fallen into farce yet, like it usually does at home!
Only about 5 weeks to go. They are planning on inducing 2 weeks early because Sarah's blood sugar levels are all over the place. I'll let you know what name we end up with. After all this, it will probably be a safe 'normal' name
-
my 2 are james and robert, both boys
-
Diggory or Charlie
-
Just be careful on the initials unlike my parents mine are DIM
-
Its also worth thinking about how easy it will be for the kid to learn the spelling of their name, and how teachers will pronounce it.
Hemione for instance, and Catriona are both so mispronounced it must annoy the crap out of them!
I have it a bit with my Daughter who is Ciara, we get "Kara" "Ceeara" and all sorts, whereas its a simple "ceera"
If mine had been a boy then he would have been William George Macfarlane but being a girl is Ciara Louise Macfarlane
I know a Michael Hunt, I was in the leisure centre the other week when a female friend came to me asking if I had seen Mike Hunt as she had been told he was here, I was wetting myself!! (then got a slap from her!)
-
R'Vanneth decided to be Annie for a few years, but now she's older she's decided to be cruel again ;) (it's easy to pronounce once you know it - arvanneth, but she gets a lot of ravanneth and rivanneth lol - oh and havanah! Go figure)
-
Don't forget to Google your choice before the birth. You don't want to find out after the event that he shares his name with somebody infamous.
I can save you some time on that. I'd suggest that Adolf, Benito, Pol, Idi, Josef may not be good choices.
You could call the youngling "Boobs wobble". They would hate you for the rest of their life, but imagine the fun you would have in the park, when the child runs off and you start shouting their name!
Ah, sleep deprivation! It numbs the mind and is cheaper than alcohol. :P

Or you could give them a Chinese name like Oi Yu. That sounds great when shouted!
-
mortisha
pugsy
bart
engleburt
-
My son is Adrian although his Dad didn't like the name... oh well. It's uncommon rather than unusual.
I agree with the thinking about names - one thing I always beg people when they are due to give birth near Christmas is not to give their child a festive name [-o< [-o<
Carole
As for initials mine are CAB and I drove a taxi for 12 years
-
Initials can be great!
My oldest brother is Douglas Iain Macfarlane (DIM) He struggled at school!
Big Sis is Hazel Anne Macfarlane (HAM) she used to love bacon till going veggy!!
Middle Bruv is Donald Alexander Macfarlane (DAM) Boy can he swear!!
Then me?? Brian David Macfarlane (BDM) I'm just confused!!!
-
I've got:
Ethan (Hunt, from Mission Impossible :D )
&
Luke (Skywalker, from Star Wars  )
Both great kid's whatever I call 'em [-X
