very vague question - but
bodies rot the same a diesels
values are less, unless they're LPG converted
need more waterprofing than a diesel
mileage is usually lower than diesels due to 15-20 mpg
used to own one of the 1st G reg 3 door disco's fited with a 3.5 on twin SU's.... wish i still had it - great car used to get low 20's on a run...but that sound :twisted:

Mine is fantastic between fill ups. :oops: :oops:
The extra power helps so much, as i found out at the local p&p day.My v8 would go up a hill backwards that a mates 200tdi 90 wouldnt go up forwards, both on insa special tracks too!
On lpg i bet they are good,but mine isnt because i am too lazy to fit the kit in my garage!

Doesn't someone do an LPG kit now that avoids filling the boot with gas tank or making it unusable off road by strapping them to the sills? I'm pretty sure I've seen one which replaces the petrol tank with a smaller one and fills the remaining space with a well-armoured LPG tank. Petrol range drops to around 100 miles but even here in Wales that'll get you to a garage with LPG!

As long as they are prepared properly, they can tackle water EXACTLY the same as their Diesel Brothers :D

I'm pretty sure I've seen one which replaces the petrol tank with a smaller one and fills the remaining space with a well-armoured LPG tank. Petrol range drops to around 100 miles but even here in Wales that'll get you to a garage with LPG!
My brother has a RRC with under sill tanks and has no problem except sometimes his footwells are a little higher at times if the lumps are big ?

i run undersill tanks and have had no problems at all..they are tucked well up out of the way.

Fair enough - I just remembered some debate about that in the magazines when LPG conversions first became popular.

If you fit sill tanks they will hand below the chassis (or hold nothing at all) but a decent set of steps or rock sliders will hang almost as low to protect them, plus the tanks are so tough you won't actually be damaging anything but the piant on them (and the brakcets if a bit weak) when you ground out.
The fuel tank replacement is a good idea, you'll get 2x36 ltanks in there, but then you have to have an 8 gal tank in the rear RH corner, unprotected in the event of a collision 8-[

i think on a disco you can get them a bit higher up out of the way than a R/R. I got pretty caught up on some sharp rocks last weekend, but the sliders took the brunt of it and the tanks never got touched. And i think they are something like 4 times thicker than a petrol tank because they are under pressure, so you would have to be going some to burst one... :shock:

well if u can keep up with the running cost. i think myself if ur spanner and electrically mind go v8 , simple way go diesel but it may feel half way of the full thrill of driving a disco if ur a petrol head at heart :lol:

When I had a V8 ~ wish I still had it ~ converted to LPG we fitted 2x40ltr gas tanks in place of the standard petrol tank and a small 25ltr petrol tank in the rear wing. No problems when off tarmac and enough petrol to get to an LPG station if needed.
Anyone on here own P 939 BEW? I want it back :'(

As undersill tanks appear to be fine I have to say I'd buy a V8 now. The running costs with LPG will be lower than a diesel and the initial purchase price is likely to be lower, so you should have change for the conversion.

Good? What for?
They're awful cars if you want a convertible, or need to drive into low multi-story car parks, or park on a narrow driveway. Just terrible.
On the other hand, a Skoda Favorit is a fantastic car, if you want to enter a demolition derby with a group of Mini drivers and only have a few quid in your pocket.
Can you narrow your criteria down a bit? On-road or off-road? Annual mileage? Passengers? Towing? Heavy loads? Modifying? Bobtailing?

I had my 200tdi running in standing water half way up the windscreen. Could you really waterproof the coil, dizzy, plugs and leads on a V8 so it would do that?

I would never have anything but lpg now... Sooooo much cleaner than petrol or diesel.

The last off road day I did, a fortnight ago, there was myself (D2 V8 with snorkel, a D3 TDv6, and another D1 V8 with snorkel) We all went to the same places and water was way up over the bonnet a LOT.
After the event we were chatting about snorkel set up (as we had all 3 generations of Disco there) and we found out the other guy had not fitted his snorkel correctly, so effectively did all of it without a snorkel :rolleyes: !!! His airfilter box was filled with mud, I wish I had taken photo's now.
Anyway, I now have supreme confidence in the V8, just a bit of preparation (or not!!) and they are fine :D :D

Love my v8 and yes its on lpg. just come back form a week in south wales did over 500 miles and cost me £80 in fuel. So got about 14-15mpg. And only time it don't like water is when on lpg as my evaporator is fitted low down on my inner wing. And also flood a petrol engine and it may cough and miss for a bit flood a diesel and bang. And the old army v8's could ford upto and over the windowscreen

Just reading this and being sad cos I'm selling my V8 :'(
The sound is awesome and the acceleration out-of-this-world for a bug truck.
However, they can 'wade' if properly prepared.
I've taken my snorkel-less one up to the headlights whilst laning recently on a river crossing.
The best prepared one I've ever seen is one built for Skippy by Chris Straw (Doodlebug) and his lad Ben. It was the mutz! They'd fully water-proofed it and extended the coil, relocating it into the glove box!
Watching Skippy's V8 tackle "The Bog of Doom" at my dad's farm, almost half way up the windscreen in water / mud - it was awesome!
