Title: How do you check the oil level?
Post by: Jonny Boaterboy on September 29, 2008, 21:50:23
Well you may all be thinking I'm a bit of a spanner...... but I have changed the oil and mesh filter in my auto box and I'm not too sure how to check the level. The hand book says one way, the manual another, If I start the engine select N and check it it is way over max. If I start the engine select D then N then R a few times the the level will drop to just below max. Which one is giving me the right reading?

I'm off to the Bala off road sight this Saturday as my birthday trip out any one else going to be there?

Thanks all

Jonny

I found the same, manual and handbook don't agree.  Eiother way you need to run throught he selector gate a couple of times to fill all the valves in the valve block.

I usually go with the advice stamped on the dipstick, in neutral when cold.

Yes I did that too! You just have to drain a bit off, dead easy to do, there's a bolt in the sump of the gear box all you have to do is undo it....... if you don't want to lose all you oil just undo it until it starts to drip and wait until it drops to the right level, this can take a while, you are better off just undoing it and letting a bit pour out and then refit it, although when I have done this I end up losing most the oil as in the panic to try and get it back in I never seem to be able to get it back in quick enough  put some newspaper down first to catch the oil your container missed! and wear some latex gloves!
