Title: Trolley jacks - whats a useful size?
Post by: vtrdaz on October 06, 2008, 20:38:08
I'm looking for a trolley jack - whats a useful size for working on a 90?
I'm looking around 2 ton - will this be enough (not planning on lifting the whole vehicle with it )

Cheers

Darren

It's what I have and has done the job nicely for a few years now. It happily lifts the rear axle up lifting both whels off the ground.

Obviously I support the axle with stands if I work under it!

By the way. My disco with full tank of diesel is 2250kg on the works weigh bridge so only really lifting 1 tonne if the whole rear axle is off the floor.

I have a 2 ton one. The ony problem I find is that the wheels do tend to sink into anything but the firmest groung unless on a board. The only thing that I find a minor problem is the actual lift, hence again the board!

Come to think about it, I have actually used it like this to get out of muddy feild when the disco sank, so a 2 ton one is fine as long as its on good ground/board!!

It's not the weight as much as the lifted height.  My dad had a massive EPCO 2 tonne jack, it's brilliant but I need big jack stands for it too.

I agree that its height thats important. My "nomal type see them everywhere one" is too tall to fit under my elise and not tall enough for a Landy so I end up fiddling.

If its maily 4x4 use get a bigger than average one and it will be safer as you wont end up putting blocks under the lift or anything.

my jack I have no problems under either car, it is my axle stands that I have problems with as if the disco is sat on them for a few days they start to sink into the tarmac.

I did have quiet a few blocks under the jack when jacking the gear box up when refitting the engine recently. Mine has also slightly twisted too (jack this is) dont know how but it has. Mine is a Halfrauds one. Another problem I have though is the handle length. Jacking in the same direction as the landy especially at the back the handle is under the disco still so you cant push directly down to lift you have to do it at a slight angle on the arm or find a slightly longer bar and slide it over the original one  to extend it out further than the bumpers.

I find mine is also great jacking my caravan up as it slides between the 2 axles and onto the chassis and makes an easy lift then.

I have a 2 ton one from Halfords that is designed for 4x4s so lifts a lot higher.
I also have a 3 ton JCB one , It is comercial size so has a wide chassis and bigger wheels.
I find a decent bottle jack is also a good investment.
I have a 12 ton draper one and several "ex" train jacks (12/14 ton)
good for jacking the axle down off chassis.
good axle stands are a must and off cuts of ply if your drive is tarmac ( I concreted mine as LRs tend to leave their mark and bigger M/Ts can tear tarmac) .

Its not so much the lifting capacity, but as mentioned the lift height, also another thing to consider, are you going to keep the jack in the car or in a garage, if the latter then a long reach jack is a good investment ;)

Something like this

Yes if you have as much lift as me a three tonner with a 4" x 4" wooden block on top just gives me enough lift to get the axle approx 4" up.

When I lift from the lowest point on the chassis.

This is the one I use... 3 tonnes, high lift (adjustable) and goes up quick... http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/ctj3000ql-3-tonne-quick-lift-trolley-j/path/trolley-jacks-bottle-jacks-transmission-jacks  Good price too!  ;)
