Title: Emergency braking...
Post by: Thrasher on October 08, 2008, 17:47:26
For the first time since I bought Bagheera I had to REALLY REALLY stop quickly because some twonk drove straight out in front of me without looking. I had about 1.5 car lengths to stop in, and I was doing 30....

Suffice is to say I missed t-boning him by about 2 inches ... what amazed me was the fact the vehicle knew it was in a hard braking situation, engaged EBA (emergency brake assist), turned off the stereo, and disengaged the bluetooth (I wasn't using it, but it comes up on the dash). Very very spooky!

The idiot of course just looked a bit shocked and then continued *WITHOUT* looking again!!!

so turning off blue tooth and the radio helps you stop faster in which way? I am confused here but sounds clever

probably to help you concentrate in braking in a straight line or something, interesting feature though!

My old 90 has EBA, but I thought it was Emergency Bump Assist. It turns the wireless off every time we go over one. It is obviously slightly more advanced than your system, as if its only a small bump it only turns off the drivers side speaker, whereas if it a proper spine jolter it shuts down the whole thing.

It funnels the extra electricity to the systems that need it at the time.

thats nothing - brake hard in my 90 and it automatically veers violently to either the left or right without moving the steering - and without affecting the stereo at all!

welcome to our world of ultimate road safety devicees eh!   Volvo spend millions on devices like distance sensors, sleep dectectors , when all thats needed is some slopy steering joints!

I did a quick stop in the freebie, very impressive. Thinks like this are very good indeed.

The last time I had to do an emergency stop there was a piercing whine from the passenger side. The noise sounded very much like <edited>

If I'm right towards the danger unless of course your expecting it to and the then it will away for long enough for you to realise and react at which point it changes direction. Now that clear stuff.

Used to have a Pug 307 ... if you brake *heavily* then the hazards do come on.

If you brake heavy and sharply in our Merc it draws the brake pedal away from your foot and brakes harder. Haven't actually had to emergency stop in it so don't know what else it does. Always thought about just trying it but a bit cautious in case something bad happens

These Germans are quite clever bright  ;)

It's not one of those that brakes automatically when you approach another vehicle, is it? If it is, you've got more money to spend on a car than I have

CD is create diversion. It is like the others have said when they brake hard it swerves to one side. This is the same type of thing but a bit more extreme as when you brake hard it creates a diversion through a hedge, ditch etc.

Someone told me that on their corsa if you braked hard enough the brakes would stay on even after you had stopped and let off the pedal. Sounds dangerous to me.

I have an emergency braking sound. When I have to brake heavily, there is sometimes a loud bang from the rear of the Disco. It sounds somewhat like a car hitting a towbar.

I know we've got (basically) the same engine as you, but I'd hazard a guess that the brakes are better, even if only due to the lower weight of the vehicle.
I know they're good when I've had the odd chav pull out & try to beat it

Oh, & Neil, I think I've got fully used to it now ;)

I've not had that myself, but a collegue initiated that particular 'EBS' the other day by striking a Discovery at a roundabout

To make up for the weight, Land Rover fitted the same Brembo brakes as a Ferrari.....

I'd never noticed that Brembo were the fitment of choice on the supercharged derivative :-k

I have one of those but mine comes from the passenger seat and can last a long time after you hit the brakes.
