can anybody tell me the simptoms of a bent push rod? i have reasently done the timing and had the pump set but every full revelusion of the engine there is a tick whitch sounds like a valve is tapping in top of a piston i have done the tappits. has anybody got any idiers it has been like this since i brought it
-
a bent push rod although it may make a noise itself wouldnt open the valve enough to fire let alone hit the piston...does the engine run??
-
the engine runs ok until it pulls then it has a miss fire perhaps the valve isnt opening properly on the inlet or outlet ???
-
Could be a worn rocker bush/shaft. Are the valve caps fitted? If the rods have been bent in the past - there is other damage that might still be there. Tappet slides are easily damaged, and bits can get chipped off them.
-
how do i go about finding this out and am i better off just bying the bits and changing them anyway? P.S thanks for the pics and by the way you were a great help last time and my timing is now spot on.

Undo the tappet adjusters as far as they will go, then check to see if each rocker is loose on the rocker shaft. If there's any play, then the bushes and probably the shaft has worn. You can remove the pushrods with a bit of care without removing the rocker assembly and then be able to look down the pushrod holes to see if the slides are damaged. The slides come as a kit - slide, roller, and sleeve, and to replace them you would have to remove the head.

thank for that i think it will have to wait a week or 2 though taking the head off sounds like a masive job

I did a head gasket on my 2.5NA and thought all was OK until fired up to have a missfire looked at rockers and No 1 was not opening, investigated by removing the rocker asy and found broken base tappet, removed head again and renewed all 8 as a precaution, refitted and great! this was a result of having a 'ticking noise' and slight missfire (head gasket).I'm sure your ok to do this in 4hrs like me.

thanks for that mate what do i need to do the job?

The guide, slide, and roller come as a kit.
Not sure what engine you have, but TD and N/A engine it's 507829 (x8?) - 200 & 300TDi is RTC6564 (x8?).
You will need a head gasket of the same thickness as your old one. Possibly also rocker cover gasket and inlet/exhaust manifold gasket.

thanks les

Check all your clearences before getting too giddy. Strat it with the rocker cover off and check everything is functioning correctly.
-
the clearances are fine i set them a couple of weeks ago. if i start the engine whith the cover off will i get a face full of oil.
-
It spits little bits of oil everywhere, but it's not that bad.
If you place your finger on each tappet while the engine is idling - you can sometimes identify which one is the problem.

sound like a plan. knowing my luck i will lose a finger
-
8-rockers and 10 fingers, at least you'll be guaranteed to have two left :)
