Title: Td5 MOT Failed on smoke level
Post by: Stan 90 on October 14, 2008, 21:16:25
Hi guys,

As the title say's, my disco td5 failed its mot on the smoke level

Readings were 4.17 (limit 3)

Last year it only just passed with redex and a heavy right foot on the way for the test

2 years ago the reading was just 1.61

Does anyone have any ideas whats happened and how to fix it (remove egr, change exhaust) ?

Oh, it has been chipped and has K&N filter fitted but mot reading was 1.61

Any advice would be great   ;)

Mine failed when one of the injectors packed up.  It passed with flying colours after the injector was replaced.

Might be worth checking your MAF meter, could be making it over-fuel?

When you say chipped do you mean plug in box or remap?

Blimey, 4.17 is high.  Mine read 0.52 and I thought that smoked badly.

Whenever the smoke level's rise I always check the pressure/temp sensor on the inlet manifold.  If you haven't blocked off (or removed) your EGR, then this sensor will always get gunked up with oily stuff and return duff readings.  This in turn could lead to overfuelling etc . . . .

As David suggests, the MAF could be at fault as well.

Check you intake pipes(from turbo) for leaks i've had the hose between turbo and waste gate control split which caused bad smoking, Another thing is to look for oil marks on the intercooler (particularly if you have an uprated one like ally-sports) around joint have had an ally sports intercooler split 4 time in 5 years along the welds, first time it when pop and I lost power cost £150 to find the cause to, the other 3 time where slow so I didn't notice the different in power loss for some time.

My mate had exatcly the same problem with his chipped TD5 tried diesel treatment injector cleans change air filters in the end he had to get it de-tuned to get it pass MOT and then he got his old ECU program put back on it.
