Title: Differing rear axles
Post by: Hightower on October 19, 2008, 19:33:35
Can somebody please explain what the actual differences between the two rear axles I have are?  From the outside the only difference is the shape of the casing on the nearside and the length of the diff noses.  However, does this indicate something else that I don't know about?
I am at the point of making the decision of which one to keep i.e. remove, restore and refit, so would like to know where to spend the time and effort.

The one at the top I think is a S2a - they lost the strengthening 'web' at the bottom with later S3 ones. Other than that, they are identical.

... the strengthening web can rust and result in an MOT failure. However it can be 'ground off' without any effect in performance.
