Well where do I start,
started at 9.30 sat morining to take the starter motor of my 200tdi, as it needed a good clean, it was staying engaged after starting. Took it apart and sheared one of the bolts in the housing, spent 3 hours trying to drill it out. at 1pm decided enough was enough and got a quote from the local lr specialist £90 for a exchange unit.
Got there closed for lunch
My mate had some with me told me of another lr specialist he knew down the road, great guy gave me 2 "knackered" starters one from a 200tdi one from a 300tdi so we could build one good unit.
Going on the advise we had about the condition of the units we used the new solenoid I bought 4 weeks previous most of my starter and the starting cog and mechanism off the aquired 200 tdi unit. - worked brilliantly on the bench. 3 hours later still trying to get to work in the car, was spinning but not engaging.
With nothing to loose we put in the"knackered" complete unit off a 300tdi - worked perfectly first time and hasn't missed a beat all weekend.
finally finished at 6pm.
Saved myself £90 and have a box of spare starter units into the bargain.

Luckily not had that prob with the disco
But the series ones, luckily easier to get out and even easier to strip, no solenoid! just a bendix kit, job done
-
The one on my series 3 is a doddle to change by comparison
-
No need to leave the 90 ticking over when you stop for a coffee now then

-
ive jus put another starter in the 90 & its a doddle with a 4ft extension to come out through the engne mounts

The only way I could get the start out was to take off the downpipe and the manifold off the back of the turbo. It wont go underneath with the cross member in place.
must have put it on and taken it off about a dozen times saturday.
I'll save a fortune in desiel now I don't have to leave it running.

My starter went on my Disco. I got a new one from paddocks. Left the unit in the car as my old one was still just working with a few taps but broke in the supermarket. Got my moneys worth from my AA membership
