I've got a 1994 3.9 V8 if I change the oil can I let it drain out over night? I have been told you can't as you will have to re-prime the oil pump with Vaseline. Is that right for my engine? I think I might have a later gear type oil pump, allthough I'm not sure, if so can you let this drain over night?
Thanks Jonny

If it's a serpentine belt then you have the later HC oil pump. You can let the oil drain over a long period but leave the oil filter on.

Thanks RRB, I have got the serpentine belt so I have got a H.C. oil pump...... H.C. standing for? Why do you say leave the filter on? If it will self prime itself can you not take the drain plug out remove the filter let it drain over night, put it back together fill it up with oil and away you go?

I'm not too sure if the high capacity oil pump is self priming but IIRC there is an anti-drain back valve in the bottom of some filters.
However if you do it with the oil hot I don't see why you'd want to leave it more than half an hour anyway :-k
I'm sure with the engine cold and no oil pressure you'd do more damage :-.

Your right RRB no real need to drain over night.
I guess i have just been worried about it losing its prime if I take my time over the oil change but that doesn't appear to be a problem on mine. I will change the oil with a little less hast in future! Thanks
ps what does IIRC stand for I know Ill kick myself when you tell me!

IIRC = If I Remeber Correctly!
Also, remember to have a drain pan big enough for the oil coming out....
Not only was my pathetic little 5l draining oil can too small... but the hole for the oil to drain into the can was too small for the speed the oil came out at... hell of a clean up job!

I knew it!!! I feel like such a dumb arse!!! I even got my wife to see if we could crack it! Thanks skibum!
I have had the same problem draining the oil as you IIRC!, My old container did not have a hole big enough either! so I got a 15l open container for the job.... I still get it everywhere though as it gushes out to start off with and I can never get it all in the container  Always spend half an hour cleaning up, I have started to put news paper down which makes it a bit eaiser to tidy up! Thanks mate!

I've had it gush out past the N/S wheel before now when it's hot. One day I'll invest in some of those special drain plugs you can attach a pipe to, but they are about £60 per car and we've got 3.

still not cheep but more like £20 a car...
