Title: Rear Diff Bad Sounds
Post by: Jeff J J on November 09, 2008, 21:56:02
Hi all my rear Diff started making very bad sounds  :(. I have had to replace the rubber coupling twice in about 3 months and now after driving for about 8 miles there is a loud knocking sound from he rear. I think this could be the Diff on the way out any one got any other ideas  :-k. Jeff

As Lee has said ^^^ check the UJ in the rear prop. It is better to remove the prop shaft to check for UJ wear. Warning!! Make sure that you put the centre diff lock in or else you won't have any handbrake with the rear prop off! :)

If not the UJ then check the play in the diff pinion bearing....this is also best done with the rear prop off.

Like the guys said, UJs would be the first port of call.

IMHO ......... I'd ditch the rubber dougnut first chance you get - swap the rear prop for a rear prop from a 200Tdi and change theoutput flange to a 4-bolt arrangement. Much better, esp on "lifted" motors

Going to get under the beast tomorrow and have a good butchers. What sort of things should i be pulling, rocking, bashing I changed the rubber coupling 2 days ago. With the 200tdi what would i have to change to conect the prop to the diff.

Assuming you have the 220Tdi rear prop, then you will need to change the flange on the pinion of the diff......just like the one that you have on the front diff :)
