hi i got a 300tdi disco
the problem is that it have just started squeaking when its ticking over,,,
it sounds like the fan belt but only at the top pully above the alternator,, sprayed the pully with wd40 but it when on the belt and then realy loud
when i rev it up it goes i think or just goes quieter over the diesel engine...
anyway i bought a fan belt,, planing to fit it when its dry when ever that will be but have any 1 had trouble with pullys like bearing goin,, if so how hard are they to remove,, its the thermostat one,, top that is...

More than likely to be the belt tensioner, loosen it off and insert a one pence piece behind it at the 9 o'clock position then tighten it back up, it changes the angle of the pulley and the squeak miraculously vanishes!
Alternatively if you are flash with cash, change the tensioner at £45 ;)

Or if you are skint - do it for a tenner :)

I had a similar problem earlier today when rebuilding the top end of my engine, pick up abit of a squeak spray wd where i thought is was and it got worse, i found that the tensioner was loose, the problem i had was that the threaded bar it sits on work loose from the inside so had to take it all off and re-tighten it with lock tight, all fine now, so you might have a similar problem,

Not wishing to disturb your happy thoughts but if spraying the pulley above the alternator stopped the squeal then I'd suggest checking the play in that bearing cus it's the water pump and it's no fun if that goes on a dark night in the middle of no-where. Ask me how I know :-(
Altering the angle of the belt by using Bluestrobe's fix may just be masking a soon-to-fail pump bearing. Changing the angle of the belt also alters the direction of loading on the pulley/bearing and may cause the noise to go away temporarily.
Gotta be worth a look see :-)
