Well there I was walking home in the dark from a parish council meeting. I have my bike jacket on and Hi vis jacket over it so I can be seen. I'm walking down a lane with no path and see a car parked on the the other side of the road, lights on indicating right but engine not running. I thought they were reading a map or something, so i carry on walking and this bloody thing nearly runs me over! while pulling into a drive way.
yep you guessed it, it was a Toyota Prius running electric. If I could have heard the engine I would have waited to see what they are going to do. But with no noise I Thought it was stopped. The drive was nice and friendly and apologised for some reason he hadn't seen me  god knows how! but hey it happens.
It got me thinking how much we relay on vehicle noise for road safety....

Reminded me of the old bike stickers...

Its a very interesting point, I reckon that the city of the future will be a deafening racket of beeping electric cars, like wagons that have beepers on reverse.

if a prius runs out of petrol how far can it go on electric ?

at work I am crossing roads all day and the amount of times I just listen for engine noise is a fair amount of the time.
