I reckon thats a quick way to spend a lot of time being hassled by various govt departnemtns. No doubt you will be prosecuted as aiding terrorists (no kidding).

Also there is the face that because of this SOME of you customers will be dodgy so look out for stolen credit cards and the like, not all mind I have used fancyplates.com for stuff just becuase its easier than going to Halfords etc, but they are getting so tight at MOT now that its not worht the hassle so the market will dry up.

Thats my opinion mind.

On an asside....................

My sister in law is a civilian manager in the vehicle licence, reg plates and speed camera side of things for West Yorkshire Police. She was at a conference in Manchester the other day and they were told that the private registration side of things is finishing!

basically everyone with a private plate will get a letter in the next couple of years to say that the reg is no longer valid and here is your new age related plate!!

They cant do that surely?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I have two and would lose a small fortune!

What about all the companies that have private plates on their fleets?

That seems a little strange as its the government thats making money selling them? They are getting tough on people who make plates though.

it does seem strange doesn't it?? I asked a couple of mates that work in the DVLA swansea about it last night and they say its nonsense as the goverment makes a fortune from them, but according to this keynote speaker its happening!!

But what if the plate that came with the car is a personalized one .

I remember when you could ask for specific letters when you ordered a new car.

We did it with two new transits last three letters were the name of the firm .

It could never be made retrospective. The only thing that might happen is that the sale of new ones ceases. But, quite frankly, it is not likely to happen because the government make too much from it as previously suggested.

As for making plates, I wouldn't want to get into that trade. We used to sell them years ago and we stopped as soon as you needed licencing. We could see it getting more aggro as time went by.

IF it ever came in, these plates wouldn't be a problem that I can see?  at the end of the day, they are still "normal" plates, they just happen to be the last three letters of signifcance!

I haven't heard that one, I have heard that those that alter their private plates to spell something or look like a name etc, will get a letter from DVLA informing them they are going to lose their plate for altering it including the normal fixed penalty.

That makes more sense to me!!

There was  recently a government consultation out that asked for feedback on increasing the penalties for altering number plates.

If I recall it was suggesting that instead of the current fixed penalty (£40?) it should be £80 and three points.

Remember that you do not own a "private" plate, only the right to display it. The DVLA has always had the power to remove that right although I am not aware of any time that this has happened.

A guy round here was in the local paper a while back for number plate offences, it seemed he was taken to court as fixed penalties had not made him change his plate. It read......

S1TUD

And yes it was on an annoying little "modified" Corsa

That's a real shame: 'show' plates look just like the real thing and so easy to order.

Sorry: rubbish.

(Owner of two pre-63 plates).

They can try? but personally I don't think they will go ahead with it as this side of the business is so profitable for them.

I think what you are refering to was a decision that anyone with a personal plate on which the letters don't comply with law with regards to size spacing or type face will be fined and if they repeat the offences their entitlement ot the number will be revoked.

No, the meeting she was at was VERY specific! And it was top level management from the DVLA that was stating it to all the senior police officers and senior civilian staff in the UK that are involved with the traffic and camera side of enforcement.

in response to the revoking of private plates what possible difference would this make to enforcing fines etc? ANPR can read a small 'show' plate through thick fog so the fact it says   'look at me' rather than 'yn07bor ' is irrelevant. At a recent auction HRH 1 made 90k + so somehow i cant see them wanting to refund that can you????

btw my plate is BIG ****

i believe the police and the people making the legislation are absolute idiots if they think that now I have to give a dna sample, blood and my children to get a plate will deter criminals. Its absolute crap. Criminals will steal cars and plates from other cars....because they are criminals. They arent going to pop into Halfords with their ID to get a plate now are they.

so once again Joe Public gets bent over the desk by the authorities for no benefit and no reduction in crime!!!
