I've had that and know for a fact that it had finished on a 0. I refused to pay the extra penny.

Refuse.  You shouldn't need to pay any more than it says on the pump.

Sorry, I agree, its the principle of the thing!!

Its happened to me too, put the pump nozzle back, reading 0n the zero, then all of a sudden it changes to .01!!

OK, its just a penny, but if I'm paying for that penny, i'd like the extra little bit of fuel thank you!

The Esso garage at Eye near Peterborough has a change pot on the counter full of coppers. If you go over by a penny or too for any reason you can take the extra from the pot. Not sure it would work if I said I's gone over by a tenner though...lol

I wonder if that is an Esso thing Mark as my local one also has the same policy.

I have seen a couple of petrol stations that have a bowl with pennys in it and a sign to help yourself on the counter, maybe its a design problem that they know about. but cant be arsed getting sorted. I have always been tempted to grab a fistfull of coppers and see what they say

True Panda, and look at the profits the gits are making!!!

The huge profits are the fuel companies not the forecourts. Most of these are purely tied to the fuel supplier, who dictates the price. They make about 2 to 3 PENCE a litre which just about pays the leccy bill. They make the money on the other goods they sell.

There was a garage at Leeming bar services that always used to charge 10-15p more than when you put the nozzle back.  I complained to trading standards under the weights and measures act.  About a month later he was closed down....I dont know if it was due to me or not!!

But there have been loads of times that the same has happened with the penny or two pence, it clicks over when you walk away.

As for the people who say its only a penny.  If you get a penny in your change would you bin it?

I think not!!

I have a sensible (boring) thought.

Basically petrol (and everything else) is sold in round pence, so maybe as its a liquid when you pump in petrol the pump is dispensing that liquid, but not in round pence worths. Thefore when you hang up the nozzle it rounds up the amount delivered to the nearest whole pence.

If you fill a car you can get it to pump a bit wihout the price dial moving despite the liters dial moving.

This reminds me of the 1/4 dime on the salary bill issue in Superman 2 (or3) with Richard Prior. "We are dealing with a genius, no doubt he will lie low" just a Richard Prior turns up in a Ferrari.

But surely it should 'round up' based on when you release the trigger, not when you put it back on the pump?

"But surely it should 'round up' based on when you release the trigger, not when you put it back on the pump"

No because you may press the trigger again and dispense another fraction of a pence. It will only round up when back on the pump possibly some time has passed, as it must "decide" that you have reached the end of the sale?

Just a guess.....

The pump is told what it will charge to dispense at in purely a numerical form. Be it 99.9 or a round 1.00 a liter. No as you fill up watch the liters as you go, depending on how much per liter will show how different the pennies click over compared to the Ml on the indicator. No go slowly and you'll see for every n ML you put in the pump will put x pence on the display.  Now take for instance sake at work we are currently @ 94.9 pence a liter for Petrol. So if you have 30 pounds worth of Unleaded you will have 31.6122 liters of petrol dispensed. But crafty enough you can click the pump onto 31.62 liters of petrol. Now should you squeze the trigger a bit more then you still have 31.62 liters (the display isn't huge enough to have multiple decimal points) but the little extra go in will then put the price up to 30.01.

If you are feeling lucky you can try it. Put 19.98 in then very gently put a wee bit more in, the liters will be 21.05 a bit more and the liters go 21.06 the 19.99 comes up on the display, a bit more and you get 21.07 then 20.00 will appear. no if you can you could just round over to 21.08 liters but it won't be enough to put the cumulative amount up to 20.01.
Spend 10 minutes with a calculator dividing money amounts by the cost of fuel to see the full amount of liters you get.

Now i as you can guess work at a petrol station and mostly i'll let the penny go and just charge you the round amount. Go over by a few pence and i'll charge it. but it'll depend on the circumstances. Strangely enough having done a fair bit of filling up (we have an attended service should you want it) means that in the 14 months of working their i have only once done a .01 on the money and that was because i wasn't paying attention to the liters going in.

P.S We only make a few pence per liter on total sales of fuel now take in the overheads of staffing and maintaining the garage and we don't make a lot. So much that my boss has mentioned that should it get any less in the sales then he might not bother with the fuel side of things and just concentrate on the MOT and servicing. So i'll be out of a job. Not a great prospect in the todays economic climate.
Fact being as we are on this topic i'll say this. Now American Express offer these amazing rates for their customers with cashback. Now how can they afford to do this. Well they charge the operator an obscene amount to put it through the PDQ machine. So we don't allow American express cards. As about 4 people through our machine would wipe out the days profit.

So it's not all Rose's and champagne Selling petrol.

Now dont be silly  [-X [-X
I will put it in the charity box on the till.  Sounds patronising but I will put bits of change in them when buying brekky or bits and bobs, s'pose it adds up if we all do it  ;)

To add to the point 'devon rover' made, if it happens again get a reciept and calculator, most say how much ££'s and how many litres you got.  If it doesnt add up....... sue them

It's not 1p though. Suppose they do this to everyone who buys fuel from them in a day, in a large number of garages? They would be making a fortune from those extra pennies on top of charging us outrageous sums for fuel. It's not the amount of money involved, but the principle.

Funny how oil is now around $50 a barrel but diesel is still £1.11 a litre here - I distinctly recall when oil was last $50 a barrel we were paying well under £1/litre...
