recieved an email today from what looks like pay pal :-. i,m thinking this is a scam??? seeing as the email addy says its from paypail :shock:

Why is my account access limited?
As part of our security measures, we regularly screen activity in the PayPal
system. During a recent screening, we noticed an issue
regarding your account:
Our system detected unusual charges to a credit card linked to your PayPal
account.
(Your case ID for this reason is PP-0041310.)
How can I restore my account access?
For your protection, we have limited access to your account until additional
security measures can be completed. We apologize for any
inconvenience this may cause. In order to assist us with this security measure,
we ask that you send us a photocopy or scan of one document
from each of the three categories listed below and return them via email to
security@paypalfraudcheck.com :
- A clear copy of your Passport, Photographic Drivers Licence or I.D. Card (both
sides).
- A clear copy of both sides of the credit/debit card on your paypal profile.
- A clear copy of a recent bank statement or utility bill on which your name and
address are clearly visible - less than 3 months old.
Completing all of the checklist items will automatically restore your account
access.

call them to find out. They will confirm it, also try and logon, I have had it a couple of times, but I was locked out.

I had the SAME email...... look at the address it came from!!!!
DO NOT SEND THEN ANYTHING........... simply log into paypal on your browser........... and log in as usual to check you can get in.......
I got into my account fine... so i deleted the email....!!!

Most definately log in direct, don't go through the link on the email.

I've heard of other people who have had the same email. It's bound to be a con with what they are asking for. Time for a bit of :police:

I had a similar one, said that there was a new email addy addedto my paypal, login to delete it. They even added the link to do so!!
I deleted the email and logged in to check there wasnt a new email....there wasnt!!

The other way to tell is to right click on the link and look at the link properties, you will often find that it doesnt point to paypal!
A bit like this http://www.paypal.co.uk (http://www.ebay.co.uk)
You can see the clickable bit says its going to paypal, but if you click the link it will in fact take you to ebay!
Very simple to do, but still very effective, alot of people do fall for it.

The list would give them everything they need for identity theft without even getting off their backsides. They wouldn't even have to rumage through your wheely bin. You would be sending it to them on a plate.
People must fall for these scams. Otherwise it would never happen because it wouldn't be worth their while doing it.
Basic rule....
*Never...... ever* click on a link from an e-mail unless you are 100% confident of it's source. Always type it into the browser. That way, you know you are going to the place it suggests it is. Not some 'hidden' link as BadgersRover demonstrates.

like wise never click the link from an email go direct if you clicked the link and try to login it will say something like account restricted try again in 24 hours and then they have your account detailes and bye bye cash on your real account
if you really want to click the link enter fake details you will get same response but when they try to get your real account they get [!Expletive Deleted!] all just waste's there time

It occurs to me that a neat little sting operation could be mounted on these. If a series of unique false sets of data were made available for us to type into these boxes, which would then, if reused by the scammers, trigger an automated system to record their IP address and location and pass it to the Police.

Definitely a scam just had the same email forwarded it to spoof@paypal.com and they confirmed it was a phishing email and told me to ignore/delete it

scams will be http only where as genuine emails from these people will have https the `s ` means secure.

Not necessarily; there's no reason scammers wouldn't be using https as well. Don't assume it's safe if it's a secure connection. It just means nobody can eavesdrop, not that the correct company is at the other end of the connection.

Speaking from the perspective of someone err... "in the position to know"
NEVER Follow a link to anything official in an email, especially if you weren't expecting it. Don't even bother checking to see if the URL looks legitimate, just don't click on it.
You can make links look legitimate even if they aren't, firstly some mail browsers will display something which can be forged, alternatively due to international character sets (those funny letters that foreign fellas use) it's possible to have paypal.com and paypal.com being different addresses (the second one having an invisible accent over the second a meaning it's pronounced pay-p-haal.com, but you can't see that) If you must then type the address in manually, and stick to the address you were expecting. If it's really urgent, and legitimate then they will have something on your account page, or homepage to tell you about it. So log in as you would if you'd never got the email.
NEVER Follow an email from your bank, paypal or indeed anyone anyway. Most organisations have declared they will not send information via email, they sure as hell won't ask you to confirm it. If it's that urgent, they're not going to try and get hold of you using email, the bank has your phone number and would use that instead.
NEVER Trust a computer that isn't yours, if you haven't got a good idea of what was installed on it, you're stuffed. Even SSL won't help you out (yes, you can eavesdrop on https conversations, it's tricky, but not impossible)

Plus, if it was DEFINATELY for you, it would say your name at the top,
NOT,
DEAR, Paypal Member or Dear (insert eBay name)
I just ignore these types of email, plus the one time I did click on it, Norton blocked it saying it was a fraudulent site!
I would always log into my account by going direct to the site, never through the email

If your e-mail has a name in it, the scam mails will insert this. So having an e-mail address like xbr58463@blah.com will pick these out. Any legitimate company will know your name as you suggest.

Nice theory but it probubly comes from overseas so no one will bother/be able to take it further.

If you get an email you think is not right, If you move the cursor over the link (BUT DONT 'CLICK' [-X) At the bottom of the screen it will say the address the link will send you too.Something like www .ivegotyourdetails............
Try it on one you know is safe.

I would go further (and tried to ;)) and say that even if it transpires it is something you want to click on the type (manually, with your fingers and everything) the address in rather than clicking on it.
search for "international domain name spoofing" if you want more information, however whilst that particular problem has more or less been solved now something similar will come along in a while :)

Good rule of thumb to not get scammed.
The bank doesn't come to you, you go to the bank.
If you go to paypal and log in through the main http://www.paypal.com web page do you get the same message?
Never follow links in emails to log into an account.
Oh paypalfraudcheck com, that domain is registered to a Mr Ryan Guiness in CA, doesn't sound like the owners ebay to me ;)
