It's common practice. There are still many people who never bother checking for competitive quotes. It applies to all insurances, mortgages, credit cards, etc. Too many people still just keep paying up and the companies rake it in. If everyone shopped around, this practice would cease immediately.
I would almost guarantee if you rang them up and told them you were not happy with the quote and are considering going elsewhere, they would slash huge chunks off the figure.
The only time it is used for a good reason is if they no longer want a particular type of business (usually after a merger or takeover). They then quote high for the unwanted business. That way, they either get rid of it or get a stonking premium. Either way, they are happy.

I had the opposite this year.
Renewal came through £205.00 fully comp all mods listed.
decided to phone around just to see.............cheepest quote was over £400!! so phoned my current to take them up on the renewal and as I was paying in one go it was reduced to £186. I'm ok with that! its through MCE who advertise in LRO and the policy is with NIG.

Flux: 110 V8: £99 :D

Spot on there V8MP. My sister is an insurance manager. She tells me ways to knock £10's of pounds off my renewal price, works everytime. Things like your occupation, instead of an RAF engineer, Im an Aircraft Engineer!
I still inform them that Im employed by the RAF though.
I hate insurance companies!
