just had an online survey from Land Rover Owner International and one of the questions was about online sites visited, and Mud Club was in the list :dance: the rest were mainly online sites of magazines.

Yeah, I noticed that when I ticked that one as the only site I visited, didn't even tick the LRO one, well why should I after being snubbed by them when I begged a subscription from them for the Birthday Bash, I even cancelled my own subscription because I felt so badly about it.

I also only ticked Mud Club!!

What I saw most were actually normal online forums like this one. :roll:
Was good to see OLLR managed to get two spots in the list. Clearly it's better than all the other forums, leafers rule. :P

i just done that as well, i said that i did not want to see so many of their ( the writers) land rover with their blatant bits of advertising features (free bits they get to 'test'), that winds me up, i want to see statements like " i got given these springs for free, but they are crap and i have given them back" thats journalism not what we get at the moment.

biggest problem with LRO is that they are not enthusiast led anymore, all corporate!!!

I am getting fed up with all the adverts and less and less good articles. I also think company's like Scorpion Racing should not be able to use up 6 pages. If they pay for 6 pages, does that mean we get more pages in total or do we get less articles and more adverts but the same total number of pages?

What would you call a good article? I think they've getting better over the past few months.

I think that depends on what landrover your in to and how you use your landrover. I would like to see less commercial stuff and more journalism.
It cant be easy because they do need to make money, cover many different landrovers and still get the commercial stuff in, but I am not the only person I know that thinks companies taking up 4 or even 6 pages with the same adverts every month should not be allowed.

I just found this survey in the spam box of a redundant email account of mine, not sure why or how they used that address as I do not recall ever using it. I am not a member of their forum not do I read their (or any) magazine. :huh:

The physical cost of adding pages is negligable when compared to the advert charges. A 6 page ad in something like LRO will cost a couple of thousand Pounds every month. So they are easily paying for the extra paper! However, adding pages for editorial would rely on selling more copies as a result. A fine balance to be drawn, I think.
As you suggest, it's a difficult task to please everyone all of the time. If they had one article on an unmolested Series 1, another on a tricked up Disco, another on rock crawling in the US, etc.... the chances are only one or two might really interest any given person. However, if you publish loads of articles about fitting Scorpion kits or similar, you appeal very much to that specific audience. And this guarantees a loyal following from that group of people.
It must be very difficult to find the right balance in any publication.

I havent bought or read it for ages now - have they reported the dimise of old scropion racking, or do the ads still exist in there?

Scrapiron went under after the last issue hit the shelves, next issue has yet to go out, so funnily enough I don't think they have.

I made the statement based upon the fact that I had purchased religously the magazine for 3 - 4yrs and it never changed - their write ups reviews were blatently biased towards certain suppliers seemingly that mysteriously had their kit on the 'staff' cars. If you noticed their product tests , they were lousy, they never really seemed to conclude anything - I conclude that they didnt want to upset any suppliers so compromised on the summary.

I think it was last months issue that had a competition to win £2000 of Scorpion kit. I bet i win this one :doh:

I have read LRO on and off for some years, however when I picked up a copy of TOR a while ago the difference was incredible TOR seems much more down to earth - we don't get features about chequebook expeditions or the latest shiniest kit, but we do get photos of events that we mere mortals stand a chance of getting to or even competing in. I've seen plenty of ideas that I can adapt for my own truck too.
Don't get me wrong, my off road knowledge came from LRO and during my first time off tarmac the instructor couldn't believe I'd never done it before. But they are a bit too corporate for my tastes now and I think others better reflect the 4x4 world that I see.
