For the last few thousand miles, I'm finding it difficult to engage second gear.
It's worse when the engine/gearbox/xfer box is cold, but even when running for a few hours, it's still a little reluctant to engage.
I've replace the oil and made sure it's topped up......
Ideas?
Cheers

it could the box on the way out or the syncro is worn so it would be a new box

R380 gearbox ? What oil you put in?
MTF90 is the recommended lub by landrover (5 litres part number STC9157)
Previously ATF was the recommended lub for the R380 but the MTF90 does give smoother gear change and a quieter drive train (in my experience).
I have read elsewhere MTF90 has cured 2nd gear change problems

I've just starting using Difflock Evolution 1http://shop.difflock.com/difflock-evolution-fully-synthetic-speed-gear-litre-p-51.html (http://shop.difflock.com/difflock-evolution-fully-synthetic-speed-gear-litre-p-51.html), when I say 'starting', I mean that over the last few months I've been topping up with it.
Perhaps I should drain the ATF and replace it completely.....

that might be an idea... ;)

Why are you topping up? I run ATF in my LT77, I check it every 3000 and change it every 6000. It never needs topping up. If you are topping up regularly there must be a leak or something wrong surely.

i have the same problem on my 300tdi 90, some times happens in 4th as well.
how easy is it to drain all the oil and then replace it? and what tools are required?

Hi,
If changing the oil fails to solve the problem, it might be worth having a look at the two springs that hold the gear-stick in it’s position.
Take of the gaiter, then take of the black rubber cap, on top of the box you’ll see two springs (one left, one right). By adjusting them you can change the gear stick position and that will also change the way gears are engaged (or found….)
I used to have a LT77 that wouldn’t engage third, after a bit of fiddling with those springs, it changed from “night to day†!
Good luck !

synco rings will be worn and quite possibly second gear itself, althou a set of syncro rings will certantly make the problem alot better i reccoment Colin Whitehouse in wolverhampton for any repairs, hes not a rip off mercahant, honest quick and cheap, and he also knows what he is doing!

You will need a Torx Tx55 for the R380 filler plug. Can't remember what size the drain plug is but Ithink it's a hex bolt.
