Following my wifes recent chassis bending session  our 300tdi xs has been written off!! Gutted!
Not sure what to replace it with, not sure whether to go with a pre 2000 td5 or to have another 300tdi, cos its what we know and love.
any comments would be greatfully received, and also hints and tips on what to look for when purchasing!
many thanks
Jase

TD5 gets a bad press, but there are loads of them out there and it's one of LRs success stories. I'd have a DII if I ever had the money.
That siad, find a 300 TDi that's solid and it'll be a good truck, I like them.
either way I'd hope a 2,499cc TDi engine will always avoid too high a tax bracket, if gordonhammer them int he budget he'll get every white van driver too and that'll loose them an election for sure.

td5 are a pain in the <edited>.ive never heard a good word for them from dealers or specialists
300's are cheaper to run and more reliable, find a goodun and stick with it, but get a mig set and get practising

how about finding a 300tdi with a blown engine and put your engine from the chassis bent disco into it? This way you will know the engine already and have a newer disco!! ;)

Well muddy, that was the plan, until yesterday, when the engineer rang my wife and told her its a cat B and we couldnt have it back!!! Marvelous!
So after a bit of a dissappointing payout, this is the scenario, do we get what we know or try something a tiny bit different!
cheers for your responses guys

Crazyness.
It is the car that is damaged beyond repair not the engine!! All the bits that are recyclable like engine, seats etc etc will now all be ripped out by a machine and destroyed.
Bonkers.  This country needs to learn a bit about recycling and land rover owners!!!

I couldnt agree more, we had plans to do just that really. Its a great car, looks wise and driving wise. The maddening thing is we just replaced the clutch in the last month along with a few other expensive bits of maintenance. Gutted!
-
and I bet you had a full tank of diesel too! ;)
-
how did you guess!!!
-
I hope you bargained all the toys and fuel etc into the pay out?
I got my ins co to write me a letter saying that all the off road products are included as extra to the price if I ever make a claim.
-
If you aren't happy with the payout don't accept it.

I currently have both sitting on the drive... picked up a 300tdi this morning from discotdi! Sadly not staying with me for long, I bought it on behalf of a relative.
You need to drive both really. I'm very happy with my TD5 - and I know plenty of people who have good things to say about them - but the 300tdi is a nice truck as well. There's quite a difference in size, comfort, ride and handling. The appeal of the 300tdi is that it is a nice simple vehicle, compared to the far more complex TD5. But the TD5 is quieter, more comfortable, handles better and has more creature comforts. I'm glad I have a TD5, but I'd be happy to keep the 300tdi if I didn't have the choice.

Speaking from my experience from working at a dealer stay with a 300 tdi as if you know how a spanner works you can fix it yourself
on the other hand there are some very cheap td5's out there my dad was offed a v reg manual with leather and air con t&t for £750 the other week as that's all one of his customers was offred trade in
-
Blimey,
What was the mileage? Had it gone to a distant galaxy?
Do you know if it is still available? what colour and mileage and where is it?
cheers
Jase
Do i sound quite desparate?
-
a bit desperate :lol it's in guildford surrey not sure on mileage will find out if he brought it or was traded in
-
I'll have it for that price... :)
-
No we saw it first!!! :D :D
-
I think we all would. I would have it too! Race ya to it
-
Was sold my dad brought it and sold it to one of his customers sorry folks
But it was a bmw dealer that offered them jack for it, so maybe worth asking about your local dealers what they are getting traded in as most only go to auction
