I have a 1991, H reg, 200tdi Disco 1. Its standard, and completed about 220,000miles.It has Air-con that doesnt work due to the belt snapping 18months ago. I bought this vehicle with little or no service history with it, about 3 years ago, and has just past another MOT.
I have got to assume that the cambelt requires changing along with the water pump. I understand MM4X4 do a Cam belt kit at resonable price etc. but is a long time consuming job to do, or is it fairly straight forward job to do?
While competing these things, is there any other things that require doing while the front end is off?
thanks

i would suggest changing belt and tensioner and idler pulleys aswell while you are there, you will need a front cover gasket and seal, there is a 4x4 specialist in wolston, definitely worth a call can be found on yell.com. relatively straight forward to do just take your time and make sure eerything is locked and marked up upon strip down and put back together exactly.

its also a good idea to get a bit of cardboard so as you can put the bolts in as they come out like a template save loads of time as there are about 5 diffrent bolt sizes and get replacement woodruff keys for the crank pully :D

Have a look at this link. Its for a 300Tdi but the procedures are very similar. I'd probably invest in a Haynes manual if you haven't already done so.

Things you will need (or make it easyier)
Cardboard as said to push the bolts through (draw a rough copy of the layout and put the bolts through in the position they go)
Tippex , this is good for marking the timing points so they stand out.
Sharp scraper and gasket remover to clean surfaces .
9.5 drill bit to lock the pump.
and a needle type torque wrench to set the tension a clik type one is no good for this ( I didn't have this so had to nick the wifes car and go to a mates half way through the job)(http://www.buchananspokes.com/images/Misc-TorqueWrench.jpg)
3/4 inch drive socket set and a big pole to get the crank bolt off
and tread lock to put it back
Have fun :D

This thread is the replacement of the timing belt on a 200TDi Defender, which is the same as a Disco with the exception that a Disco engine has an idler wheel, whereas the Defender doesn't.
You should at least replace the belt, tensioner, timing cover gasket, timing cover dust seal, and water pump gasket.
If there's evidence of engine oil inside the timing case, then crank front seal and/or camshaft seal.
I wouldn't use cheap kits - they tend to contain poor quality parts.

how you doing mate, when you do the cambelt, like the others have said changed tensioner and everything, and dont use cheap belts mate, use dayco, which is what genuine is,and i always go through the tappet gaps as well, you will notice a difference, and be carefull prizing the timing cover off, they dont usually give problems, but a mate has broken one before now :D

A 200Tdi Cambelt isn't hard to do.... (well in saying that the Land Rover 'specialist' that did one my customers cars last couldn't do it lol)
I do a complete cambelt kit for a Discovery - including a Dayco Belt, OE tensioner and idler, and genuine spec gaskets for £55 + vat. I know that there are cheaper kits around, but I only use genuine or OE parts - not cheap replacements.
And I'd also change the cam and crank seals (x2). Although more work (although a lot easier with the belt and pulleys off), if you don't know when it was ever changed, I'd take the front cover at the same time and fit a new paper seal from the water outlet on the block to the front cover (called a P gasket on a 300Tdi, bit on a 200Tdi its more of 0 gasket).
The hardest thing is usually getting the pulleys and damper off. Without pullers, you will struggle.
Its then just a case of lining up all the marks, locking the flywheel and FIP and putting it all back together.
